Need a good non-western (USA/Europe) based Anti-malware.

Recommended Posts

Been noticing some performance issues. Neither Norton, Spybot, nor Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware seem to detect anything, but I know something isn't kosher. Don't have any unusual processes running, so nothing I can look to on that end.

Basically, I'm thinking that I might need help detecting something a bit more exotic than what Symantec is likely to detect. As many newer viruses are coming from Asia, I figured that having a non-western based anti-malware/virus might be worth finally looking into. I can fudge through almost any interface, so the language of the program shouldn't be a problem.

I'm apprehensive of those "free" online scanners since some of them often cause more problems than they might solve, or sneak things in when you are busy enabling whatever controls are needed for scanning.

So basically, I'm looking for the help of someone more worldly to suggest something that might help.

I swear by Kaspersky, a favorite of techies. The options include a free online scanner that actually works as it's supposed to, a free trial, or the licensed version that covers up to three computers for one price, though it ain't exactly cheap at about $80 US. Russian.

Currently using: _ All FREE

Avira Antivirus

Zone Alarm firewall (however, I am considering changing to Comodo)

A combination of Spybot Search and Destroy, an older but still very good anti spyware that has active prevention

And Super AntiSpyware, a scan on demand spyware detector and remover. Yes, Super is part of the name.

For checking out running processes - to see what is taking up so much processing time, (Where are all those clock cycles going?) Process Explorer goes far beyond anything else I have tried.

To find out what processes are loaded - Autoruns You will be amazed at how much is loaded.

All of these and many more free and for pay progs are available here: MajorGeeks.com http://majorgeeks.com/

I recently came across a compilation of many tools called "Computer Repair Kit" at this site http://www.technibble.com/

It can be run from a USB stick and has helped my with several problems already. Lots more stuff like this at the site.

ANY supposed spyware program that pops up and says "SPYWARE DETECTED" and "You must run this program to eliminate the threat" - IS bogus and at best is a blackmail scheme to force you to buy their mostly useless product to get rid of their annoying pop up. At worst, it is a way to con you into downloading a virus. REVO Uninstaller (also free) can get rid of most of these if you already fell for their scam.

Of course, every geek has their own favorites and you will probably see many more suggestions.

I can give a thumbs up to every one of these suggestions as well. I might add HijackThis, and CCleaner. I sometimes take a look at HJT, but I wouldn't live without CCleaner. I'm sure you can get both at MajorGeeks. The dev team of CCleaner has recently published "Defraggler" also, which does what the name implies.

Don't know if you've tried Avast, but since I have 5 computers functioning I use it on one of my networked computers and I highly recommend it for a free excellent Antivirus solution.

Bben I haven't seen this technibble before, I'll be exploring that.

How could I have forgotten Hijack This! Great program, as is CCleaner, which is included in the utility kit.

Just checked the Technibble site, and the kit is no longer offered as an all in one download. PM me if you want a list of the programs that were on it. Many of these are not for beginners, but most intermediate techies will be able to use them.

I was hoping for something a bit more user friendly, which looks at actual processes and not just definitions. Or at the very least, one which has definitions that others probably don't have. A non-western based antivirus seemed to be the best idea for this since it would likely be serving people who would be among those first to be exposed before it spreads around. Or at the very least, might be nice to know what other options there are out there that people really aren't aware of.

One technique that might be helpful (often is for me when I'm troubleshooting others' PCs) is to use the RUN command and type "services.msc" (leave off the quotes). Anything that doesn't have a description could be a bit more suspect then the others. Look through them all and anything you don't recognize you can google and often find an explanatory reference. Many of those services can be stopped or made to load manually.

If you stop a service from auto loading, try running the associated program. If it runs fine without the service it's likely a safe bet. Of course you wouldn't stop any of your AV or firewall applets. Things added by Real Player or Itunes or Quicktime, for example, are usually real safe bets. Give a shout if you're unsure.

PS not sure if you meant Kaspersky but it's not western.

Another good one is Ad-Aware.

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-Anniversa...4-10045910.html (Free and fully functional version. Might upgrade some day, when I have the cash to spare.)

I'd also advice you to get PeerGuardian.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/peerguardian/

You can see, control(Block or allow.) all the outgoing and incoming internet traffic on your PC with that, one of my personal favourites.

edit; Here's what I use as my anti-vir. The protection so far has been 100% reliable for me.(Used for 3 years.)

Peerguardian is an essential security program imo (though I am a big bittorrent user nowadays so I have a lot of use for it), provided you keep it up to date. Though youd be surprised at how many websites take ages to load because theyre waiting for their ads to load :P

Other than that, I just use AVG Free, which is good, but not exactly foreign, so I doubt its what you're looking for.

I can highly recomment CCleaner and Autoruns as well, both those programs have saved me from having to reformat my oc in the past lol.

Though tbh, if a virus has spread enough to reach your pc, then chances are it wont make any difference where the virus scanner you use came from anymore anyway.
