Getting Started

Hey there! Rosstin here. I'm interested in giving Skyrim+mods a shot! Can someone direct me to a good tutorial?

I'd like to try and run it as painlessly as possible. I did Morrowind with mods using Wrye Bash way back, that was fun for awhile until I managed to break it... has it gotten easier or harder to run mods?

I'd like to just get some nice content mods that work well and aren't glitchy.

I'm starting from scratch, I have a computer without Skyrim on it, so I can do a clean install of whatever version of the game is best. Do modders release modified versions of the original game which have been updated to run better with modifications? What's the best setup?

I'm sure this gets asked A LOT, but what are people's favorite content mods?

I've only played vanilla Skyrim, but my favorite Morrowind mods were the race mods, the companion mods, some of the quest mods, and the little ones that did simple things like add random dialog and books, those were really neat. Less Generic NPCs was good, and Witchgirl Adventure was my absolute favorite for the way the companion interactions really spiced up the rest of the game.

The graphical fix mods for Morrowind, while nice, never really grabbed me that much. I understand the desire to make the game look nicer, but the prospect seemed to pale in comparison to adding more user content.

(I'm working on Rex Rocket currently, and one of my favorite parts of that project is writing pages and pages of one-liners, sayings, koans, and random nothings that characters will say to you.)

First, never listen to anyone that says play the game without mods for your first playthrough. Whos to say that you will want to play through it again? might aswell get the most out of it the first time.

I personally go far too overboard with mods in this game so ill list the ones i think are a must:

Unofficial skyrim patch + unofficial DLC patchs - (if you have the DLC)

Static mesh improvement - (if your computer can handle the enhanced textures)

Some sort of Lighting Overhaul mod, - theres 3+ really good ones to try

SkyUI - really dont know how i coped with the vanilla menus before this mod

SKSE - (script extender, needed for certain mods including SkyUI)

Sounds of skyrim pack for that better immersion, - though not a must for sure

A Quality World Map - can set the detail, personally i just set it to show main roads

Edit: Also download the application BOSS, it will automatically configure your mod load order (very important) and saves so much time and hassle.

Horse armor- is a great mod because it keeps horses from dying and makes them look cooler ( and trust me in skyrim, you'll start to get annoyed by your horse dying to much)

Sovngarde immortal version- stops you from accidentally killing your own follower

So is it fine to make a fresh install from my old Skyrim launch-day DVD on my Windows computer? I guess there aren't as many problems with "types of Skyrim" as there are with "types of Morrowind"?

I'm also seeing this thing called a "Walmart pack" which seems to be a combined ISO of various things? Does that include the mod fixes?

OK! I bought Steam Skyrim, revved down the graphical settings to minimum, and got it installed! Then I got NMM working, and installed

Random Alternate Start: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25404//?

Character Creation Overhaul: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/21587/?

Lore Loading Screens: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/21265//?

It works! I'm pretty surprised!
Next I plan to install:

Do you think any of those will break my game performance-wise? I have a pretty low-end rig... I don't expect to be able to run the game for long, I'm guessing I'll be able to play a character for about 15 hours before Skyrim just kills my computer (and that's without the mods.) Planning to get a new computer around September, though.

hmm no maybe the npcs will hurt your performance a bit, but it shouldnt be too bad.

okay one last thing. you are using 3 mods (cloaks, immersive armors, immersive weapons) which change the so calles leveled lists. that is how items are leveled with your enemies and what you can loot on them.

so there can only be 1 leveled lst active, yet you have 3 mods which change it. i guess you can see the problem.

in order to solve the problem you will need wrye bash. at first it is confusing as f***! but i used it for oblivion and now also for skyrim.
