Sabat9
I'm talking about Placeholder file uploads with no file. Much too often, it's little more than a title and some rough concepts, and then nothing is ever actually produced. There are some interesting ideas thrown out there among the endless weapon mods and completely useless crap, but I'm a firm believer in PUT UP OR SHUT UP. Yes, this is somewhat of a critique of the current work being done around here. My first thought is to just be a di*k about it, but that wouldn't be very productive for me, now would it? Putting up or shutting up applies to me too, so I'm kinda on dangerous ground here with this post..... Still, I would like the Admins to do even MORE to discourage this practice. I've seen LHammonds warn posters to post an actual file or have the posting removed, yet it seems the majority of mods that are not a toy car that shoots nukes, or a pink deathclaw retexture, are nothing more than masturbatory pipe dreams. At a certain point, it's up to the community guide itself in the right direction, and it's out of the Admin's control. We are not there yet. There is some really great stuff that's been out there for a while. Those modders know who they are, and should not take offense to this post. I'm probably enjoying most of those mods myself. The file posting section of this website is for posting files. Shooting ideas around is for the forums. I find it dissapointing and discouraging to find so many interesting concepts without a file to actually download. Afraid someone is gonna take your idea before you do it? Well my advice is to hurry the hell up and actually make a mod instead of jerking us around and wasting everyone's time and bandwidth. thank you. nezroy
I gotta agree with this. If you want to share the excitement of your new idea, start a [WIPz] thread and go crazy. You'll (probably) get lots of encouragement and moral support. But uploading a file is for something that has at *least* reached a state of play-testing, and preferably at least beta. Since this is probably going to turn into a mostly rant-based thread anyway, I'll start off with some random additional pet-peeves to add onto the dogpile :) 1. No one is going to steal your idea. I promise. Please don't start a [WIPz] thread that says something like "I have this really cool idea, but I don't want to give away too many details because I don't want someone to steal it". Trust me, there are already far more good ideas floating around than there are willing modders -- your idea is 100% safe. 2. Don't be afraid to contribute to someone else's mod. The more you help others, the more likely you will get help yourself later on. Also, particularly if you are just starting out, helping with an existing project is an EXCELLENT way to learn the ropes. You'll have a group of people who will be personally invested in helping you succeed, because they want your contributions to help their mod reach reality. 3. Learning to use the G.E.C.K. and all the other tools you need is hard. Yes, we all know this. Please please please don't start yet *another* thread on this forum complaining about it :) If you really want to be helpful, then write a tutorial about your experiences getting started. If it comes to a choice between a million "the G.E.C.K. is hard" threads vs. a million "yet another tutorial for G.E.C.K. noobs", I'll take the million tutorials any day. Your unique perspective may help someone else where the other 999,999 tutorials didn't, but your complaint thread isn't helping ANYone. Either suck it up quietly or else do something to help others over the hump, but in no case should you just come here and whine about it :)
Callighan
I think placeholders are fine. They make me feel excited.
veliv
I agree with Sabat9 and nezroy! I would also like to add that feel free to ask for help and recruit others to your project, but only when your amount of work equals or is greater than the amount of work you ask from them! And yes, not knowing how to do this or that isn't an excuse for not learning how to do them ;)
Smosh
Well said. Placeholders must go.
Yossarian22
Totally agree. I am so tired seeing those idiots giving announcements like crazy about adding hugh and amazing things, just coz they are able to open the GECK. Later they recognize, that everything isn't that easy and give up. But the Preview remains. It's so stupid. Everything, that isn't in a Beta State shouldn't be announced in the File-Section. Also I am really confused about the concepts people modding. There are two kinds of people... 1. Those, who add House-Mod nr. 10.000 and think somebody need it. 2. Those, who have big planings adding new Lands with tousend quests and npcs and new weapons and new armors and new creatures and... you know what I mean? Can you people please mod something useful or something, that is playable someday? There are around 4.000 mods on nexus and if you lucky you find maybe 20-30, that really give you something to do. Dont get me wrong, there are a lot of great mods already, but mostly they give you new weapons, change the gamesystem or other general stuff, but all that dont help me without something to do... or should we sit in one of our 20 Houses and polishing our collection of 100 weapontypes untill the end of days? neunen
id have to agree that unless there is at least some progress (like a beta) then people should keep it on a WIP thread.
Riven1978
I don't know, i kind of like knowing about what other people are planning, so i would have to say not a total annihilation maybe make a new section where the 0 files Pages go that is viewable in a separate link? kind of like the already New files one but it would be new WIP's or something

Then you could search with "Show only released status mods". Released status would require a screenshot and file. EDIT: And a readme as well! And perhaps make rating only available for released files.
