Placeholders

I don't know, i kind of like knowing about what other people are planning, so i would have to say not a total annihilation maybe make a new section where the 0 files Pages go that is viewable in a separate link? kind of like the already New files one but it would be new WIP's or something

Well, it would be actually good if Nexus provided a drop down list for people to choose their projects status. Then you could search with "Show only released status mods". Released status would require a screenshot and file.

EDIT: And a readme as well! And perhaps make rating only available for released files.

Good Point. Something like this would be useful.

I mean, well, announcing files isn't totally bad, BUT if the people just would give some Screenshots or a detailed explaination and some kind of status report. That would be very nice. But I remember a lot of Files like this:

BIG WORLD, EVERYTHING NEW; TOTALLY AWESOME; START A NEW GAME....

End.....

No Screens, No text, thats all. HALLO? You dont even know, they already opened the Geck once.

Sorry, thats annoying. If there are some nice screens and you see, that on this mod somebody is working, well, why not, but for what make Placeholders with no Screens or Text??? I dont think the Place is limited on Nexus, so no reason for rent a Place I guess....

And then 3 votes of 10 out of 10. Great idea. Can't wait to play it type stuff.

GAH!!! :wallbash:

Personally I call this the "Amazon Effect" as on Amazon.com or related sites there's a distrubing tendency where users rate products but the user:

A ) Haven't tried yet and rate purely on hearsay/personal opinion.

B ) Rates the product even though it isn't even released yet and is rated on it's potential for success/failure.

In my opinion any rating system becomes entirely useless if people don't rate the files/products (mods are just free software in my book) on their actual merit and not something that hypotheticall would be cool if the modder in question could get his arse around actually making the mod. This is what the modification requests/general modification talk sections of the forums are for. I'd defnitely support a "state of the mod" data field modders could use to indicate the state of their work, however it'd also require that people respected it and used the correct state and updated according to mod progress.

Yup. Perhaps we could somehow make it that the users would have more control over the status and rating of the mod. As in they could vote on the state of the mod or something like that. Then it wouldn't create more pressure on the moderators.

After reading the arguments, I still think placeholders are fine. As long as the uploaded includes screenshots, description, and disable ratings. That's fair, I think.

Well i think they are fine as well but i would like the option of seeing them or not. Sometimes i see a name of a new MOD and am like YES! finally only to go in and see it as no file, screens are nice but IMO that is what the forums are for, am i wrong or isn't there a General modification Talk area with a TON of WIP's? If you don't see it look towards the top of this page :Þ . I won't say don't allow them on the nexus cause to each there own, but at least give the option to see them or not.

Placeholders are not fine. These are the rules:

http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=116

Reason for reporting a file post (i.e. to flag it for deletion):

"No file attached (for more than 48 hours)"

So, if you see one, and it's been 48 hours, click that handy little "report" link, so we can be rid of all that useless crap. Announce WIPs and plans in the General Mod Talk forum, not the file area.

That's just silly.

If the section is called "Downloads" then it stands to reason that the only thing people should be putting there is DOWNLOADS. If people put downloads and whatever else they feel like posting in the "Downloads" section then it's no longer a "Downloads" section, now is it?

How about this:

--> If you have a file that you want people to download you put it in the DOWNLOADS section.

--> If you have a [WIP], help request, or idea and maybe a few screen shots then you put it in the FALLOUT 3 GENERAL MODIFICATION TALK FORUMS. That's what it's there for!

People need to stop posting placeholders altogether. What the hell is the point? If the idea is great then do it. If you can't do it then offer it up and maybe somebody else will do it. You can't call dibs on a mod idea. Any of us have every right to make anything that we're capable of making, and none of us has the right to declare some concept to be our intellectual property. Implementation of the idea is all that matters anyway. Thinking of it first doesn't mean ****.

Frankly, the reason that people are posting their stupid placeholders in the downloads section is that the Mod forums are pretty dead, and the reason that the Mod forums are dead is that people are being allowed to post their stupid placeholders in the Downloads section. Force people to post things in the correct location and the problem ought to take care of itself.

There's no need for making a new section for WIP posts, or adding new search features to avoid seeing stupid placeholders in the Downloads section, or any of that other silliness. We already have all the tools that we need. It's just a matter of enforcing the rules.
