crashing after main menu

just installed the steam version of fallout 3 i have no dlc no mods and fully updated it starts fine i hit new game and it goes to a loading screen then crashes to desktop.

 

i am running windows 7 home premium

and my hardware stats are at least twice what the game requires

Things to try:

 

1) Run the game as administrator (or install as such)

2) Try setting your settings to low - I know, your rig can handle higher settings, but just try it so you can, at least, eliminate that as a possible issue.

3) Reinstall to a folder NOT in Program Files

4) Try running the game in XP compatibility mode (this is probably groping at straws)

5) Return the steam version and find yourself a retail CD. ( I hate steam, but had no choice with Skyrim)

Fallout 3 commonly has issues with multi-core processors with more than two cores. Try applying the fix described here.
