How do you create/add/rename "DDS" files?

I am very new to modding, and have only completed up to the NPC part of the GECK tutorial.

There are a lot of great retextures available, and I have some ideas for ones I would like to create. I tried searching the GECK help but could not find anything to help me create DDS files? Is there a tutorial available somewhere? If so could you post the link - thanks.

Thanks in advance for any help.

you'll need an imaging program first of all.

Photoshop is the standard, but if you dont have a copy, download a program called GIMP, it works just as well and it's free!

secondly, you'll need to download the .dds plugin for whichever program you'll be using.

google searches for the above items are a snap, since i don't have time to provide links rite now....

once you have everything installed, just open up the .dds texture files and edit away. Keep in mind there are usually separate .dds files for the textures and the normal maps, and for starters you'll want to just mess around with the texture files and not the normal map files.

hope this helps, and i actually recommend using GIMP, as i seem to remember the GIMP forums having alot of specific info/tutorials on fallout3/Oblivion stuff.

.dds is an image extension, youll need an imaging program to change or create them.

if you dont have one, gimp and paint.net are free

you can get .dds plugins for gimp and photoshop, just do a search online

also there is a stickied thread at the top of this forum called new to the geck and modding? look here first and in that there are links that will help answer some questions for you.

edit: sorry didnt see the above post as i was writing

I'd also recommend you pick up the Fallout Mod Manager which is not only handy for keeping track of your installed mods and their load order, but it can also used to unpack the texture files from the native Fallout 3 .bsa archives such that you can edit the vanilla textures/meshes/sounds etc. as you please.
