Need help beginning quest upon reading Note

I have scoured the internet looking for a solution.

I have followed several(cant find very many) tutorials, and read plenty of other threads requesting the same thing.

I am at a lost. I can't seem to get this to work. This is my first ever quest for Skyrim SE.

 

I have decompiled the scripts.

I have tried adding the DefaultOnReadSetQuestStageNotAlias script to the note I am using to start the quest.

I tried everything and nothing seems to work. Reading the note does nothing.

 

I really want to make this work to start this new chapter in my modding adventure. I would just scrap the note idea and try making the quest start via NPC but that would really throw off the whole premise of the quest itself and the lore I am creating around the quest and new lands I have added.

 

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated. I will keep everyone updated on what does and does not work. If some how I find the solution outside this thread I will also link the solution here for anyone else who may be having the same issue.

 

I would like to note that I do have other mods running while testing this mod as I want it to be compatible with a wide range of mods. But I am wondering if maybe I need to add Alternate Start as a Parent file for this mod. Does anyone think this might just be the simple solution? I would rather get feed back on this just to be safe before adding a new parent that may cause some issues or unwanted changes to my mod.

I don't know anything about quests but my only advice is:

 

1. Try disabling the other mods when you test yours, just for the sake of attempting to isolate the problem. If everything works ok when you disable the other mods, then I guess that means you know the problem is caused by a conflicting mod

2. Try changing the script variables to a different quest and stage (e.g. one that already exists within the game), again just to try and isolate the problem. My prediction is that the script will work as intended with a different quest (e.g. you read the note and then the "Dragonborn" quest starts, telling you to go to Solstheim), so the problem lies with the quest you've created rather than the script.

I did this in my first mod. I don't have the creation kit to hand, but I think I had to create a quest alias for the note, and ran a default script similar to the one you've used below (ie not the 'NotAlias' version). I'll check again tomorrow when I can get to a computer and update this.

 

EDIT: so I've checked my code and I've used 'defaultsetstageonclosebook' - oddly this actually works when the note/book is first 'opened', ie read. I suspect there maybe a few issues with this range of scripts, hence you couldn't get it to work.
