*it doesn't matter what follower overhaul or other such mod i personally use UFO just so you know*

lydia hands down

that is if you use any of the followers improvement mods like UFO eff aff etc other wise followers are just not worth it and a big pain in the but no matter which one you take

 

but since i recently started using EFF and better followers she is gone help

Stenvar all the way....but as kleinstaff points out, without a little Mod improvement it's pretty pointless having Followers, they become a hindrance not a help....I use a Mod that gives Stenvar a few small tweaks, just cleans up his combat abilities a little and a mildly improved AI...plus two Mods that effects all Followers...Better Stealth AI and Followers don't set off Traps.

Lydia.

 

I've probably tried every available follower, always go back to her. Skulking around Faldar's Tooth the other day on Legendary and wanted to check Lydia's weapon charge. I swear, it was almost comforting; "I've got your back."

 

She's a good tank and if you count on her running into your line of fire, she's managable. It IS frustrating to have her, or any of them, push you off a cliff, though. That's my biggest gripe against the vanilla followers; poor pathing.
