smilinjim1 Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 I have Vortex installed on the same drive as fallout 4, and other games.Deployment method I setup is hardlink and it works fine. After a while Vortex will throw a hardlink deployment not supported error message, but only for Fallout 4. This is the third time it has done this in the last couple of years, each time it completely borks all previous installed mods and renders the game unplayable. I have searched for answers to this problem and have been unable to find a solution (starting to think the solution is to ditch Vortex and use MO for Fallout).Vortex works wonderfully for Skyrim, Witcher 3, and a couple of other games.
smilinjim1 Posted October 14, 2021 Author Posted October 14, 2021 Maybe this worked, I had Vortex revert all files and after some time it reverted 25000 + files. Seems to be okay for now?
Guest deleted34304850 Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 something is missing from your story.vortex doesn't just randomly revert files. Something happened to those files and vortex is telling you it's detected a difference in the current state, to how it thinks they should be.what that something is - is missing.it could be anything. if no-one has done something manually - then it may be that your hard disk where the mods are stored is having an issue. i'd check the health of the drive and see if that raises any flags. if the disk is fine - are there any processes on your system that touches the directories for your games? what you are describing doesn't just happen. something has occurred on your system, and you need to figure out what that is.
Guest deleted34304850 Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 well there you go.so you've changed the files outside of vortex's control and it's doing as it should, and telling you the files are changed.then you have a choice - go with what is changed, or get vortex to revert (undo everything you changed). You chose the latter, so your work has gone.that's vortex working as designed.
smilinjim1 Posted October 14, 2021 Author Posted October 14, 2021 I edited some texture files. Normally when I change files outside of Vortex the save new file option, or revert appears, but only for the files that were changed. This time that option was offered for every file from every mod, after it threw the hardlink deployment error.

Guest deleted34304850 Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 do not try to edit the files that are in your game folder. thats the root cause.if you're going to change stuff, do it outside of your folders that are controlled by a mod manager, then when you're done editing them install them using a mod manager.thats how it works.for the hardlink deployment - you've not specified the actual error message. did you copy files directly into the mod folder and break the existing hard links maybe?
smilinjim1 Posted October 14, 2021 Author Posted October 14, 2021 The software, if it has those capabilities must have changed the deployment method to "move deployment" from hardlink deployment. The revert for all the files occurred for that change I believe.Fortunately it didn't cause me to have to re-install 100ish mods. So I am going to mark that as solved, sort of. Still try to figure out why hardlink deployment will not work. All the permissions are correct and the drive is indexed.
Guest deleted34304850 Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 what software are you referring to that would change deployment?
