quad40
I've been having CTD issues at very random points in Skyrim. Sometimes it happens when I loot a body (usually on Solsteim) I've also had crash problems just wandering around randomly around the world. This happens more often on Solsteim than anywhere else, but it does happen outside Whiterun as well. However, I never seem to ever get crashes in interior areas. This is not a Papyrus issue as whenever I get a crash a Papyrus Log is NEVER created when crashing even with the option enabled in the ini file. Halendia
You close to 3 GB RAM usage in exterior?
quad40
I've only actually been hitting around 2GB or so from Windows Task manager in Skyrim. I thought that was the issue so I removed most of my landscape texture packs I had. Interior ones I left though, as those areas work fine.
quad40
My GPU however is capping out at 1GB memory usage (978MB - 992MB) according to GPU-Z so could that be causing instability issues if it is swapping out texture files in/out of graphics memory? From my experience, capping on GPU only causes crap FPS and stuttering...
quad40
Well I actually just got a crash from simply attempting to open my inventory. Which would make SkyUI possibly causing issues? Although I've never really heard of it causing a bunch of issues before.
quad40
I tried removing SkyUI temporarily and it seems to have removed a lot of the more annoying crash locations as well as random ones, but I don't really want to do without it as its such a great mod. Any idea where the problem may be occurring with SkyUI?

DeltaWulf
As Hal mentioned, you're probably hitting the game's 3.1gb limit. It's sometimes less than that (for me, I consistently get crashes around 2.6gb load), so being around 2gb is probably cutting it a little close. You should probably just play around with adjusting mods and lowering resolutions on your texture packs for landscape/exterior locations, choose medium options if they're available. Unfortunately, Skyrim is limited by the game itself in that respect, so you have to work within what it can handle rather than your PC.

When I start the game I'm only around 25%, so the game must be using some extra memory somewhere not shown in the process information. If that's the case than I would be over 3GB even without any landscape texture packs enabled.
