I'm only an average texture guy, so when possible i like to find usable images for textures specifically chainmail.

I've used this resource for several personal use armors in skyrim..

Chainmail Texture Resource http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/20387/?

and the author said it is free to use, however I'm not sure if the author just made a larger image of the existing chainmail or if he recreated the existing chainmail himself (keeping in line with the vaniila chainmail design).

So..if he just recreated the chainmail...could I use it in a mod I intend to publish? or is it part of oblivion's game files and thus can't be used in another mod for another game?

Well, that mods description pages states...

These are not perfectly generated. I used a program called ImageSynth 2...

... so it seems that they may not be direct assets from Oblivion - though I can't say for sure as I've barely played the game. Even if the asset(s) originally came from Oblivion, the mod in question also seems to have modded the original asset(s) (within the ImageSynth 2 application) so it's no longer an original game asset(s).

Logically thinking, using my above "understanding", combined with the fact that the mod has been allowed to remain on Oblivion Nexus and is still considered a modders resource then this will highly suggest that the mods asset(s) aren't original artwork - therefor you should be ok to use that mods assets within a Skyrim mod.

Does that make sense?
