Sneaking Thieves

I have a Level 2 thief and my Sneak Level is at 45. However, when i've stolen things from tables or pickpocketed people whilst my sneak logo is showing ive still been seen.

what level do you need your sneak to be at in order to steal from someone and they not notice. i know this could well be a vague question if if anyone had any hints please let me know.

basically I crept up on someone in the street, i was on sneak, my sneak logo was visable when I looked into their inventory. when I closed it down they started going off on one and I had to do a runner.

for someone trying to master the sneak ability im having a lot of trouble working it out.

You can improve your chance of getting objects by learning the spell telekinesis. As long as you are out of their line of vision it enables you to snaffle what you like. You can also pick locks at a distance etc. Another object you might look out for is the amulet of shadows, a very thiefly (is there such a word?) artifact. (If you don't know it, search the forums as there are several threads about it.)

I find picking pockets is hit and miss with sneak in the 40's. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. And you don't see the same contents if you check the pockets more than once.

I don't know for a fact but I think you will find it a lot easier when sneak is over 50. You may also like to consider how 'luck' may affect it too. How high is your luck?

Also, be sure that the appropriate attribute is fairly high as well (IIRC it's Agility). If you play your cards right you can start the game with a wood elf that has around 60-80 agility and if you have sneak as a major skill it will already be around 50, very handy for stealing a ton of equipment early in the game.

Since we're on this subject, I've always had trouble picking pockets, even at higher levels, even on low level NPC's. Do you think Luck then plays a major role in whether or not it succeeds?

You could try an invisibility spell  , or like me:

Buy one,

Go to spellmaking,

Change it to invisibility max(100 i think)-the time doesn't matter, just between 10

20 seconds long (its all u need)

This only helps if you have someone with high illusion (60+) and high magic

Try it. It works every time for me (im lv. 79 illusion)

I think you mean 'chameleon' spell... no matter how you do things, the moment you make ANY action (even if you dont take an item) you lose invisibilty... but you dont lose chameleon... so with 100% chameleon (easily acheivable from 3 sources, all of which are easy to get.... Wont say what they are here, although the amulet is one, a set of pants from the main quest is another, and any 10% chameleon or better spell to fill up whatevers left...)

A word of warning, the amulet of shadows has a HUGE charge meter, and takes a HUGE charge to activate... And because of the size of the meter, it takes a LONG time to recharge (your looking at a whole week of resting, assuming its at empty.... maybe even more then that...)

To my understanding, though, hitting about 75% to 90% chameleon gives REAL good chances to steal successfully if you are sneaking... dont know about pickpocketing... (since i dont do it!!!)

You said you had problems training sneak... short of using a trainer, get ahold of some chameleon spells, go to the balmora mages guild (i do all my training there... i dont know why, maybe because it's convenient early in the game). Go into chameleon, and stand in the far corner, where you can see other people, and they can see you. Go into sneak, and DONT MOVE... just use your control stick (xbox) or mouse (computer) to LOOK around, and if your sneak icon ever goes off, stop looking around, and wait for it to come back on. Every little bit of movement you go through while under the sneak icon will train sneak. With some patience, you can EASILY train sneak up to 60-70 with this... you can get a skill point every 1-5 minutes depending on your current skill, and how far into chameleon you are (more chameleon is better!)

Actually the number of uses and speed of recharge of the amulet of shadows seems to vary. I some games I've managed only three uses and as you say waited a week. In others it recharges almost in a day and can be used lots of times. The same applies to the amulet of levitating. Does anyone know what might cause this (random stats, luck level, enchant skill?).

the higher your enchant skill the quicker you can recharge enchanted items and the less it costs to use them.

Do you mean when you recharge it with a new loaded soulgem, or when it recharges on its own?

both if i remember correctly, but i'm sure that it recharges faster when you sleep.

Well that would make sense with what I mentioned. I think that must be right. However I don't think sleeping affects it much. I never sleep. The most I do is rest one hour to level up.

Now I shall pay more attention to raising enchant skill early in the game!
