played all the way through oblivion including dlc

I bought the game of the year edition of oblivion over a year ago and tried to play it but actually became physically ill before getting through 25% of it. Got some stomach bug or something that lasted over a week and it just put me off from playing oblivion again for a long time. But having made many mods for skyrim and still waiting for a patch for skyrim to fix all the 1.9 bugs I decided to play oblivion again to get rid of that itch to play through skyrim after modding it so much.

I played all the way through oblivion and shivering isles and knights of the nine. It took a month or more because time was not always permitting but I finally did it. Now that I have done that it feels strange to reflect on the whole experience. Skyrim doesn't look the same anymore to me because of this and I was disappointed in some parts of oblivion too.

Many times I had to use the console to get through bugged parts on the game like the main quest escorting martin and the others through the fights at the great gate and the big battle in the city. I don't like for npc to die and it is not the same after resurrecting them either so I had to console kill my way through the main fights to keep all the npc that I was escorting alive. Why the hell they were not flagged as essential is beyond me but it was very annoying and that brings up another complaint, trying to fight enemies while npc is fighting them too. It is so dam hard trying to figure out if I am far enough away that my sword doesn't hit friendly npc nearby but close enough to hit the enemy. I had to reload from previous save a lot to try and play that way which just motivated me to console kill a lot more.

I hated being in the dark brotherhood! That was the most annoying group to be in! just when I got used to some of them here comes the terrible mission to kill them all just to progress in the story although luciene got paid back for that lol and getting my horse shadowmere to go back to where it should be while not in use took a long time to do too. The only good thing to come out of being in the dark brotherhood was catching that one really bad sicko that was murdering a bunch of people in his rented basement. I am so glad I didn't install knights of the nine until AFTER all that sneaky bad guy stuff was over with. I wish I had installed shivering isles earlier though so I could have used the stuff I got from it in the main game.

Sneaking is really really hard in oblivion, this makes finishing the thieves guild quest really hard too. Somehow the guards are just always aware of everything. Once I had to pickpocket a sneak trainer to get her to train me further and when I did that, two guards from all the way on the other side of the district came running after me. I used tcl command to try and fly high up and get away from them but somehow they can fly too after about a minute! I was way high above the temple there and they just flew up there and got me in one minute. The only way to escape them is to run for the door. They can't follow me through a door but they can go all superman on me if I fly away?

I got all the houses in the game for the player and enjoyed the house in skingrad the most. I ended up placing most of the daedric stuff there and stuff I earned in the game there too. I hated trying to place all that stuff around the house though because the stuff would move around whenever I left the room and came back. Trying to live in the anvil house just felt odd, I think it was the lighting it just made things too spooky so I hardly ever slept there. For anyone still playing this game and already became arch mage, the display cases in the arch mages tower are safe for storing things. I put the king of worms duds in one of the cases and the daggers of his minions in the other. I fought that guy in traven's robes and some enchanted dwarven gauntlets. Punched the worms guy for a while before really attacking him:-)

The takeaways for me for this game were...

The daedric artifacts were more useful than in skyrim and seemed more interesting for some reason than those found in skyrim

I seemed much more concerned about my reputation in oblivion that I had in skyrim

I did enjoy playing some parts of oblivion which before this experience I didn't think I would

The early part of the game is fun to an extent

I really liked the dwarven armor in oblivion it looks a lot better than the dwarven armor in skyrim

The things I did not like about oblivion...

This game takes way too long to finish

The writing is just as bad as skyrim if not worse

eyelied ruins are a real pain to deal with

Getting my marksman skill (bow skill) to 100 takes longer than playing through the main game!

After getting marksman to 100 and then trying to switch back to swords for fighting I discovered why it mattered to get marksman to 100

Sneak attacking with the bow counts as an assault even against a bandit? Lame:-(

There are a lot of bugs in oblivion, the console is required a lot more to get through the game than in skyrim

The A-bomb bug sucks, had to go look for the fix for that right at the fight with jigglyaag!

I almost decided to shut all 60 oblivion gates manually, thankfully I decided not to do that oh man what a waste of time that would have been

Enchanting in oblivion sucks I can't get anything interestingly enchanted that lasts long in combat without the star of azura

By the time I found some interesting stuff to wear the game was over aka order priest hoods are kewl but I don't need them now since I finished everything :-(

The enemy blocks too much so many times I have to patiently attack if I am using sword and shield except against trolls and some goblins etc.

I ended up using tgm command almost all the time to carry around stuff so I could sell it. Not being able to move at all when encumbered really sucked, this is probably why you can still move in skyrim after carrying too much stuff. I ended up making over two million coin because of all the stuff I could sell off after quests and exploring and going through the whole game!

It takes too long to heal which really slows down the game and encourages me to use tgm command:-(

There are bugs with npc later on in a save file where if they discover a dead body at the same time they go off to kill each other. The tap and tack in bruma where that one guy is killed as part of the dark brotherhood quest, his body never goes away and later on two npc go nuts when they meet each other near the room where I killed him in there. The dead bodies of the thieves that I left in that general goods store in anvil docks never go away and I tried disable command it doesn't work.

After a while, about most of the way through the game it becomes very clear to me that there are too many mines and caves in this game.

Playing through oblivion made me feel kind of odd, I dunno how to describe it. Maybe like the sense of accomplishment and regret at the same time but in a weird mix? I am sure I don't want to play oblivion again, that game is just too long and too time consuming. I also didn't like having to kill that one guy in the fighters guild. At first I thought I could help him get back to doing the job right and in the end having to kill him sucked. I put his sword and helmet on my bedroom table in chorrol as some kind of memorial. The blackwood company hall still has the dead npc in it and stuff in it. Nothing gets cleaned out after beating them and their hall doesn't get boarded up after beating them. Having to kill the members of brussefs family because the excuse was my character was on drugs had to be one fo the dumbest things in this game! I couldn't wear that armor after that part of the fighters guild quest, also that armor is bugged and slows down the player as if it is heavy armor but in the game it is listed as light armor? Being in the dark brotherhood felt really dirty and did not jive well with my character. Thieves guild was not a problem though except the infamy points, I guess helping to solve the problems of the grey fox made up for it though.

I can see many of the writing in oblivion used again in skyrim, the quests and other things in oblivion are too similar to some quests in skyrim. Why does boethiah appear as a man in oblivion and a woman in skyrim? Goldbrand was fun to use kinda miss it now in skyrim. The iron and steel armor in oblivion seem more interesting than their counterparts in skyrim. The only mod I downloaded for oblivion was a mod that added the pit gear to the merchants in oblivion but for some reason the pit helmet was never for sale in that mod.

Overall it feels weird and odd to finish oblivion and then try to reason it out or reflect on it somehow. I really don't like the writing for the conclusions of the various guild quests and the way the end of the main quest plays out. Shivering isles was probably the only thing in the game that had some interesting writing definitely the ending was good. There should be some disclaimer somewhere for people that haven't played this game yet to install shivering isles before finishing the game and install knights of the nine last if you want a good ending for a good guy character.

I had hoped that by the time I finished playing oblivion beth would have made a new patch for skyrim lol guess that didn't happen.

I played Oblivion for the first time in 2007. Back then it was just about the best RPG ever... Also it had some of the best graphics of any RPG.

I was terribly disappointed in Skyrim by comparison, but I know that's mostly because I was so hyped for it after Oblivion. In fact, Oblivion and Skyrim were so similar that playing Oblivion for so long (~300 hours) kind of ruined Skyrim for me. It was like playing the same game twice, in a way. Nothing felt new or interesting in Skyrim because Oblivion had used the same formula and most of the same AI.

Objectively Skyrim is better in many ways than Oblivion, but I'm unable to fully enjoy it and unwilling to spend a lot of time on it because I played Oblivion first. It sounds a lot like the exact inverse of what you described, actually.

Sounds like you just want to be able to play through the game in a few days and be done with it. One of the best things about Oblivion is that it seemingly never ends!

You have to remember that this game came out in 2006! And was absolutely amazing for it's time. It's not perfect, but I'd say it's still one of the best games of all time.

As for the main quest being too long. I think it's just right! Skyrim's main quest (and all guild quests) are waaaaaayyyyy to short.

And you say it's hard to get through anything without using god mode? The game isn't that difficult.

I feel like if you weren't in such a rush, you'd enjoy the game much more.
