Halororor Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 My 8 month old golden retriever puppy has elbow dysplasia in both his front legs and he just had the first one operated yesterday. It basically involves them cutting off pieces of the bone, because one of the bones in his leg is longer than the bone that has to carry all the weight. Then the bone has to grow together again and it all comes down to a very painful procedure for him. We were allowed to bring him home today and upon arriving at the vet he was clearly in lots of pain. They had to give him some morphine for the (somewhat long) trip home, now I'm dreading the moment when it wears off. I really love him to bits, mainly because he's sort of my first real dog, I was too young to really remember the ones from my childhood, but he's also the most friendly and beautiful dog I've ever met. They say the pain only lasts for the first few days so at least it's not that bad. Still, I feel really sorry for him. The first picture was taken a few weeks ago and the second was taken today.
inkheart449 Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I hope he get's betterHe's a cute dog :DOne of my dogs has Hip dysplasia and it hurts her when it's cold out(It's not as bad or painful any other time)
AzirAphale001 Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 On the bright side he's so cute! Hope he gets better soon.
Skotte Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 good looking guy you have there. As someone who grew up with dogs it's never easy when one has a medical problem best of luck to the both of you.
Halororor Posted March 14, 2009 Author Posted March 14, 2009 Looking at him now you wouldn't think he had a huge operation 3 days ago, ever since he realized he can drag the bandaged leg after him he's running(well, limping, but really fast) around just like normal. I actually dread having the bandages removed as after that I've gotta keep him still for 4 weeks, which isn't going to be easy if I look at how active he is now. I'm just glad he isn't any pain and that he's still just as cute if not even more. :)
Pushkatu Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 I have a puppy to. I hope I'll never have to see it like that. I hope yours get's better.
floggingmolly22 Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Give him a treat (or something like that) for me when he gets better.
