CTD on Fast Travel

In short, my game will crash to desktop when attempting to fast travel at random times. There is one guaranteed way to replicate this problem though; trying to fast travel shortly after starting the game up will result in a crash. Load screens through other means do not have this issue. It can also happen after any amount of time playing the game and then trying to fast travel. It is very inconsistent aside from not being able to fast travel when I first run the game.

Example: I run skyrim with the correct script extender, load into a save without issues, then try to fast travel somewhere and it will go through the load screen but right around the time the load screen usually ends, it just crashes to desktop.

However, the only "solution" to not being able to fast travel at first is to simply wait a bit and/or travel by foot or horse or carriage even. After a short while, it will be fine and I can play the game normally with fast travel. Though the potential for it to crash on fast travel remains possible for the entirety of my time playing the game. I often crash and restart my game 2-3 times within a few hours.

I've been trying to find ways to fix this that aren't extremely tedious and annoying but I've got no luck with that and fear that I won't be able to diagnose the issue.

Also, I use NMM and Loot for my modding because I couldn't understand MO2 or Vortex very well.

Just know that NMM is very outdated, if you want a simple mod manager try vortex again, I used it for my first few months of modding and it was quite easy to manage. Now I use MO2, which is more complex but is by far the best imo.

How many mods do you have? Do you use LOOT? It automatically organizes your load order, something that is essential to avoid crashes.

Actually NMM is maintained and constantly updated by some modders on github.

I am confident his/her mod manager is not the cause of his/her problems.

From reading the recent posts it would seem that a lot of problems stem from switching to AE and then trying to use your old load order.

It would help to know what version of SSE you are playing.

for me, the solution was removing Alternate Life. Can't speak for anyone else, nor do I know if you're using it, but for me, it caused all sorts of issues.

Also make sure you have Engine fixes installed (both the mod-manager-installed portion and the manual insertions)

I use Vortex because its operation is something of a no brainer, and it handles most loot operations in the background (and as well I have FNIS to operate in the background too). So installing mods is simply a matter of clicking yes to Vortex's three main questions (install?, Enable?, and Deploy?) as well as handling any instances where Vortex doesn't automatically decide load order for me, which are normally, albeit not "always" as easy as choosing the recommended load before or load after recommendation

I'm playing on the most recent version of Skyrim available (1.6.342.0) and I do use LOOT. Though I may have to reinstall all my mods because I cannot remember if I'm using the same load order from before AE or if I already redid the load order.

I have 213 mods installed and active. I will confess to having added and removed mods midway through my playthrough but the problem existed before that too.

I installed Engine fixes but the issue persists. Yes, I installed both the mod-managed-installed portion and the manual insertions.

Bummer, wish I knew "the answer".

Good luck. I presume you've done all the "widenet" searches for solutions?

ex: duckduckgo/google/etc: "skyrim special edition CTD fast travel problem" (or maybe in your case "skyrim special edition AE 1.6x 1.62 1.63 CTD fast travel problem") and the like?

Ok...intersperse your fast traveling with some walking. I have no issues with fast travel, but I generally use it sparingly only for long distance shifts of play location, like from one end to the other, or from Skyrim proper to Solstheim, or to the Bruma extension land, or from Whiterun to Solitude, that sort of thing. Once where I want to be, I use foot travel for the local area (about a half region size, ex: Solitude, once there, I cover everything on that spit of land going back to Dragon bridge on foot) and enjoy the scenery.

I also make saves after fast travel just because. And if I'm on foot for a while I also make new saves. As well, when in exterior spaces for a long period of play, I make saves every now and then and then do a reload of that save....sometimes I even make a save, close the game, reopen the game and reload the save. This also seems to help game stability and reduces the likelihood of CTDs of any kind

Anecdotal for sure, but it works for me, maybe it'll help you as well.
