Retexturing Questions

Most of the tutorials i find dont really explain why you are doing certain things, so in the end, you only learned how to do that specific thing you were shown. I want to retexture a face base texture and specular and there are a few things i just cant find the answers to.

 

What is the proper way to import and export base and specular texture in gimp?

 

What informantion does .dds hold aside from just what you see in the picture?

 

If Im just replacing a texture by modifying one that already works, do i still need to use nifscope? if so why?

 

Basically im just trying to add lips and eyes from base and specular textures i found to the default textures. Im hoping it will just be as easy as copy and pasting and importing and exporting properly, because nifscope looks complicated. I get the feeling it might not be that simple tho. :ermm:

1. I'm not sure about speculars.

2. Not sure about that either.

3. You don't need to use nifskope if you're just replacing a texture that already works.

well.. using gimp i merged the lips onto the main layer(not sure if i did that right, there was some options) then exported it dtx5 but it crashes when i start the game. i get a notice when exporting about it might be a volume map but not all layers are the same size. idk how important that is. It appears there is no option to export to dtx4, is that the problem?
