Friend list behaving strangely

There is either something weird going on with the friend list on the Nexus or possibly I don't understand how to use it.

 

Yesterday I've noticed a notification that a user has issued me a friend request. I've proceeded to the link from that notification, but the option to accept the request was nowhere to be found. So I've clicked on the Add Friend button in their profile, thinking it would accept their request. Instead, this is what happened:

 

1. The button on their profile is stuck in the "Friendship Requested" state for me, which is already strange, given that it was a request from their side.

2. That user did NOT appear in my list of friends, and I did not appear in theirs.

3. Activity lists, on the other hand, show that they have added me as a friend and I have added them.

 

This can't be right, can it?
