Getting Mods to work???? Help!!!!!

Wish people would work on their mods a little more like some of the really good Authors and make sure they actually work instead of just throwing them together...

Thanks for the info....

The great majority of modders do in fact package their mods correctly and not just throw them together.

You have some responsibility here as well to read up on how to install mods correctly. If there is no clear readme with the mod, read any comments in that mods entry to see if anyone else has a problem. Failing that, contact the author if there is contact info.

Here is an excellent FAQ with everything you need to know about installing mods. You should read it before blaming the creator of the mod, because that is a really good way to alienate people who otherwise would be happy to help.

That's a very good point Maigrets. However, I don't think he meant any harm by his statements. I'm sure he meant he wishes some things were more user friendly. But hey! Don't we all? Cheers!!! :)

Yes I didn't mean to offend, it just seems that some "Modders" make thier mods much eaiser to use than others. As I said at the beginning, I know just enough about computers to get myself in trouble and really screw things up. I have tried several mods and using the Mod Manager, still end up with wierd things happening. No heads, no bodies, no eyes, no faces, or wierd things following the NPC's around (Like strange stars with writing in them, etc.), or nothing happens other than generic conversations (rumors) when there should be more interaction (dialog options).

It gets frustrating. The game is OK in its basic form but I would like to add more "Flavor" to it by using Mods to make it less generic and customize it a bit.

Now suddenly, I am having a problem trying to launch the damn game.... Keep getting an error message after I hit "Play" that "Oblivion has stopped working A problem cause the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I have no idea what the problem is... I followed the info from KottonKing and still cannot get it to work. I have gone through the "Readme" on the CD and have tried the following:

1. Uninstall and re-install game several times in several different files Programs; Programs\Games (Still get error message)

2. Tried to launch off CD (still get error message)

3. Ran Scandisk and Defrag (still get error message)

4. Ran DXSETUP (still get error message)

I have no idea what to do next... I have tried everything I can think of...

I am running:

Windows Edition: Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1

Manufacturer: Gateway

Model: GT5668E

Processor: AMD Athelon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.00 GHz

Memory: 3.00 GB

System Type: 32-bit Operating system

Display Adapters:

MovRVDrv32

NVIDIA GeForce6150SE nForce430

It sounds to me like the game is crashing. When a crash occurs you will some times get a message box that says the program is not responding or the game may close down all together. This could be a problem caused by certain mods counter-acting each other or 2 different MODS with the same function. Try going through your MODS and deleting those of the same functionality. If you are only running a few MODS try deleting them all and reinstall but first read the readme file and the known bugs section to make sure they are or are not compatible with other "certain" MODS.

E.I. You cannot have RAIAR's HGEC and EXNEM's body replacers active at the same time. They both have the same functionallity and therefore counter-act each other.

Hope this helps!

I've read that you shouldn't install ANYTHING in the "program files" directory under Vista due to UAC. I would suggest try installing all your games and programs into C:/Games and C:/Programs respectively instead of C:/Program files.

Also, have you taken a look at my pinned topic A Guide to Preventing Bugs and Crashes in Oblivion?

I have my game installed in C:\Program Files\Games and I have no problems...

Make sure you run Oblivion as administrator and turn your UAC off.

General Load-Order Guidelines

Here are the guidelines that I adhere to, personally.

~ Unofficial Oblivon Patch should always be first on the list. The fixes are great, but most aren't essential, so if a mod overwrites them its not a big deal, and the fixes have the potential for screwing up other mods if loaded later.

~ Offical Content (DLC's) should be loaded last, until you complete all quests associated with them (that includes buying all furniture for the houses and whatnot). Once they're complete, they can be safely moved up in the list. This is especially important for Knights of the Nine, which will have some fairly major problems unless loaded last (unless you get the UOP for KotN)

~ Major overhaul mods (OOO, Frans, MMM) should be loaded near the end. That gives you the most complete experience with any of those particular mods. It also lets you carefully choose which other mods to load afterwards... only move mods that you know will conflict and that you want the changes from. For example, I have Improved Soul Gems below OOO because I know that OOO changes the icons of some of the SG's, and ISG needs to be below to show through.

Some people will recommend putting larger mods first, but personally I disagree. There are a number of mods out there that make minor tweaks, and loading after a large mod will end up completely overwriting a chunk from one of the bigger mods because of the way conflicts work in Oblivion (even one minor change will take precedence over the entire record... for example, simply tweaking the speed of a weapon can cause every stat of that weapon to be retained to vanilla levels if loaded later).

So basically, it stacks up like this...

Oblivion.esm

Unofficial Oblivion Patch

<Minor Mods / DLC's (Post-Completion)>

<Major Overhaul Mod/Mods>

<Mods that specifically conflict with overhauls and need to take precedence>

<DLC's (Pre-Completion)>

Expanded Load-Order Guidelines

by dev_akm

I would extend this to include:

Oblivion.esm

Unofficial Oblivion Patch

<Weather/Environment/Sound Mods>

<Minor Mods/New Items/Houses/DLC's (Post-Completion)>

<Major Overhaul Mods>

<Mods that specifically conflict with overhauls and need to take precedence>

<DLC's (Pre-Completion)>

<Quests>

<Compatibility Patches/UOMP/Merged Leveled Lists>

And a special-case warning for Knights.esp (Knights of the Nine) -- you may not be able to move it earlier than some other mods (some people have had problems after moving it before OOO, for example).

That's basically the structure I use and I have 140+ mods working well together.

Another way of describing this (posted by DMan77):

....

Oblivion

unoffical patch

Deeper realism mods that add sights and sounds

added content like weapons/items

gameplay changes, like 'must eat and sleep'

The OOO type

the 'new begining' type mod..

I have my game installed in C:\Program Files\Games and I have no problems...

Make sure you run Oblivion as administrator and turn your UAC off.

Turn off UAC? That's a dangerous thing to do because it reduces Vista to the level of protection found in XP and it's equally dangerous to suggest that to other people. My pinned topic, A Guide to Preventing Bugs and Crashes in Oblivion, provides a link to an article which talks about Vista's UAC. I highly recommend you read this article. According to what I have read; Installing in the C:/Games directory, Run game as Administrater and using compatibility mode should make most to nearly all games work with Vista, even with UAC turned on.

I install all my games into C:/Games even though I use XP. My main reason is because the game's data files are easier to find, compared to searching through the "Program files" directory trying to remember who made/published the game you're looking for just to find a specific data file. If nothing else, this at least should be the reason you have a C:/Games directory.

If you're having the same crashes with a clean install and no plugins at all your system quite likely still has Oblvion files in hidden directories.

When you uninstall Oblivion it doesn't remove all files. For example your saves will still be wherever Vista puts them (I use Windows XP).

It also leaves behind registry entries. Backup any saves you want to keep and have copies of mods you want to use before uninstalling. Uninstall the game.

Make sure you delete every folder relating to Oblivion including any folders left behind by mods. If you have kept the downloaded archives you can always reinstall them.

If you have a problem when re-installing make sure the DVD is in the drive and Run Setup.exe. This clears any registry entries left behind and you should be able to reinstall cleanly.

At the Bethsoft Technical Help forum down the page at Number 5. It might help if the above doesn't fix it.

http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/lofivers...hp?t561101.html

If it turns out to be a mod problem perhaps you could post a list of your mods, and which one seems to have caused your problems.

Since you've removed the game and reinstalled a number of times though, it's unlikely to be a mod at this point, unless you've left the data folder intact and the problem hasn't actually been removed.

:smile:

BTW: QUOTE:

"End Quote"

Not true - giving incorrect info also confuses the issue for new users. :ermm: However unintentional. :smile:

Exnem and HGEC do work together. That's how it's intended to be. Exnem is a mesh and texture replacement for the female body. RAIAR's HGEC is a set of meshes that change the shape of the Exnem body. There are a number of body sizes to choose from and there are no esp files for either mod.

Install Exnem first and then HGEC meshes over the top. You can then use Hi Res textures for HGEC but the Exnem ones will still work.

I use Exnem/HGEC so I know they are compatible.

Exnem/HGEC are not compatible with UFF and Robert's Female Body Replacer or any other female body replacer. You can have one or the other, but can use clothes and armour from UFF in particular. You just need to use the complete outfit in most cases to avoid texture error like ugly botches or seams.
