Weird performance issues.

I haven't played this game in probably 6 months. I run a heavily modded game with the multicore crash fix ini. tweak, 4gb enabled, fake full screen and FSR (stutter remover) to improve performance/stop crashes. When I last played it the game ran like a dream (with the occasional crash, it is FO3 after all...)

 

The first time I fired up the game this time around it's been running horrible! Probably getting about 15fps in most locations. When I left the game to tweak a few settings I tried to reset the graphic settings to default and it selected low quality which for me is really weird (it normally suggests ultra)! I tried re-updating all my graphics drivers, checking my mods and fixes etc and it's still detecting the hardware settings as "low" and running awful. This has me pretty stumped any help would be appreciated!

according to your dxdiag you are running Windows 7, right? Fallout 3 has a lot of troubles with this OS. I must admit that I can't help you with this because I'm not using Win7, but look around in the forums for something like "Windows 7 fix". I'm sure there are solutions for the Windows 7 problems.

I haven't played this game in probably 6 months. I run a heavily modded game with the multicore crash fix ini. tweak, 4gb enabled, fake full screen and FSR (stutter remover) to improve performance/stop crashes. When I last played it the game ran like a dream (with the occasional crash, it is FO3 after all...)

 

The first time I fired up the game this time around it's been running horrible! Probably getting about 15fps in most locations. When I left the game to tweak a few settings I tried to reset the graphic settings to default and it selected low quality which for me is really weird (it normally suggests ultra)! I tried re-updating all my graphics drivers, checking my mods and fixes etc and it's still detecting the hardware settings as "low" and running awful. This has me pretty stumped any help would be appreciated!

 

Also my dxdiag.

Based on that and your post I assume you want your high settings to be set By the launcher, is that correct? If so, follow the following to the letter and you shall have you cake and eat it too.

1. go into the game Root folder, Find the (VeryHigh.ini) Copy all the data to clipboard. close it.
2. Open and edit each other file, medium.ini,low.ini,high.ini,( each now has the very high settings so no matter what, the game will default to that.
3. Run the game launcher, it should now select the very High Ultimate settings for you. But pay attention to details, do not launch the game just yet.
4. Verify the graphics card is being picked up now in Fomm or the nmm managers, the settings for graphics. If there is some glitch not known?
5. It will show up with the screen size being not registering or the chip set not being there, greyed out. You did say you messed with the drivers.
6. If all is Identical, relaunch the launcher and recheck, run the game from it first, Notice how the screen responds, the windows.
7. Do this in Full screen mode, not windowed mode, understand? why?, because you need to set a preference in the games saved game.
8. you can upgrade settings in fo3, you can not downgrade them. For instance, U grids set at 9, you run the game and save. you have maybe 2 hours on that saved game, you set the ugrids back down to 7 or 5, CTD, instant no load. can't go back, requires the launcher to reset the View settings.Plugins.fo3viewsettings
9. AppData\Local\Fallout3\Plugins.fo3viewsettings That is where the data gets stored. For your graphics card and display drivers.
10. If you get what your after. run the game for a short while at in game menu settings" large" for a bit. then set to medium , work your way down too small and see if the display drivers you installed can handle it.
11. If not, you may need to reset the OS display drivers all the way back to default Yuk 800x 600 vga only, boot into safe mode and clean the OS registry and start over. Best choice of action at that point is to allow windows update to find and indicate the updated display drivers for your equipment, Choose only the hardware downloads, nothing else. once that's done, repeat the above.

On a final note: my game runs with out any ini files in the game directory once set, I delete them. yeah, strange huh? But my game does not crash, FPS is 60+ all day long, except in really heavy spots, it drops to maybe 30. once in a blue moon, I get a freeze, always mod related. Used to be OS related.
