Skyrim Random Lockups Need Assistance!

DreadFeign

Recommended Posts

Hey there folks. I've got a bit of a problem. My game has been randomly locking up a lot lately and I'm fairly certain it's mod related. Usually I'd suspect it's just Skyrim reaching the 2.5 or 3GB limit or whatever and locking up because of it but I'm not so certain anymore. Each time the game locks up it's been mostly random, although I've noticed that I've even been locking up in interiors, during combat or doing just about anything else. There's no real pattern but prior to just recently I'd never really experienced a lockup during combat or in an interior.

I have already taken some measures to either reduce or stop the lockups but nothing has helped. I've tried reducing all of my HD texture packs down to 2k from 4k, removed some suspect mods, swapped out mods for other newer/better ones, cleaned any dirty mods, created/rebuilt bashed patch whenever necessary and run BOSS frequently to no avail.

I'm pretty much out of ideas as to the culprit and I am hoping that by explaining my situation and posting my load order that someone can spot something that I haven't yet. Thanks in advance!

So here's my load order:

(Not shown is my ENB stuff/Quietcool ENB)

1 are active mods, 0 are mods disabled for the bashed patch

Looks like you have a fair few mods which utilise scripting.

Have you tried runnning Tes5edit with your mods to see if any load errors are present?

Which enb binary are you using?

One way to see how your memory usage is going is to use the Skyrim Performance Monitor found here: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/6491/?

If you're using the latest enb binary with enboost.exe make sure to go to setup and select detect enb binary :)

Haven't tried the TES5Edit thing. I'm using v0200 for ENB. Was running performance monitor and my memory averaged out at 1.5GB and maxed out at just over 2GB. Ran over a period of an hour and 7 minutes this time without lockup as I exited the game to post results... It's really odd. Sometimes I can play for 2+ hours without lockup, sometimes it happens within 5-10 minutes of starting a play session.

Skyrim is a cruel and fickle thing

Good idea to run boss to see if there's any mods that need a good cleaning, then run Tes5edit and apply said cleaning but before you do that it's best to check mod pages to see if it actually needs it or it's intentionally made with the dirty edits.

Have a look through this: http://wiki.step-project.com/User:Neovalen/Skyrim_Revisited_Skyrim1.8 (even though its for 1.8 the mods are basically the same and up to date) It lists which mods need cleaning etc and an entire list of recommended mods.

There's also this: http://wiki.step-project.com/STEP:2.2.6 which is more uptodate but I prefer using the 1.8 version and visiting the mod pages to see if there's been any posts in regards to cleaning or crashes etc ;) Always a goo idea to do the manual work.

Best to use mods which are updated regularly and not from 2012 or that add simple fluff to the game (like more interactive objects for example which in my opinion is just unnecessary havok scripting etc)

Aww but I really enjoy my more interactive objects! I just think it's unrealistic for certain things to not be movable or grabbable... I also tend to clean only the mods that are flagged for it in BOSS. Whether the cleaning was unnecessary or not I really don't know.

I just think CTDs are going to happen now and then. I played 13 hours with a new character and no CTD. Then I got two in 5 minutes with no new mods installed and Skyrim Performance Monitor saying I was still well in the 'safe' zone.

I just don't know man...what can you say?

But I agree that too many scripted mods aren't a great idea. I've learned that the hard way. That, and too many hi-res texture packs. Since going back to the official hi-res DLC and fewer scripted mods, my game is much, much more stable.

Also, there are a couple of mods there (not saying which because I don't want to make it sound like they're bad mods) that are known to be problematic. Just google search a bit and see which mods consistently cause problems for people.

Which mods? Anything helps. I've begun considering getting rid of either the highly scripted mods or some (maybe all) of my HD texture packs. Maybe I am running too many, though I don't think I am.

Currently for hi-res textures I use:

AMidianBorn Book of Silence / Textures for Immersive Armors

Skyrim HD 2K (Lite)

Beards Hi-Res

Better Males (Male body mod) with hi-res face maps by Geonox

Brows Hi-Res

CBBE with Nuska's Mature Skin

EBT (Enhanced Blood Textures; not sure if hi-res)

HQ3D Map with 2k textures

Hi-Res Legible Road Signs

Project Parallax Remastered HD2K

Realistic Smoke and Embers Hi-res

Snow and Rocks Textures HD 2K

Plus a lot of my armor mods use high res textures though I don't have a ton of custom armors...

I'm also using SMIM.

Does anyone have any recommendations for which of my mods/scripted mods I should consider getting rid of (muh grab movable statics  )...?

Reconsider using frostfall, wet and cold and RnD.

Skyre does almost all of what your 'other' minor mods do. Have a look at using it instead of having 50 different perk overhauls, smithing, combat tweaks/overhauls.

I will include my mod list with what I consider 'essential' for my playthrough as a guide for mods you might like to use. It is pretty much 90% stable.

NOTE: is you use Skyre you wont need sneaktools, smithing overhauls and ABT (only the looting option vendor quantity)

It's entirely up to you, but the less mods you use the easier it is to pinpoint specific ctd causing mods AND lets you play instead of fixing :P

Heh that's a lot of mods to get rid of. Or did you not mean to highlight all of them? I've heard SkyRe is very difficult to get working with a lot of other mods and quite frankly I prefer ACE.

UPDATE: So I ended up doing a complete uninstall of all my mods. Followed the guide to making Skyrim vanilla again and also picked up Mod Organizer (I've been using NMM since it came out). I've been following guides for optimal setup of Skyrim/utilities/mods and after hours I'm currently only on the step to optimize my vanilla and HRDLC textures, lol. It's gonna be a long night...
