Basic Mod Versioning and Cross Contamination Prevention

So I am really wanting to make small personal mods (specifically a player home mod currently, as modular mods for player homes are not really prevalent), at least to start. I am perfectly happy with only using vanilla assets or assets that are meant for mod authors.

 

However, my main issue is my desire to play, and create, in unison. By this I mean I do not want to be experimenting, and potentially balls up my installation where I cannot play like I normally would, modded of course. However, I am currently limited by storage space, so my 'usual' methods of versioning and separation are not very practical.

 

Does anyone have any advice on the best practices for this?

 

Also I am looking for any guides/documentation for SE that follow processes on a beginner level for player homes. While not my main focus here, they would not be unwelcome.
