Black Screen and Grey Screen Bug

I have been playing a non-modded oblivion for about 1 week, no black or grey screens at all!

I installed some mods, and it started. First only when sneaking, later at various occasions until I finally noticed a blackscreen that I got when I put on a helmet. Two of the mods installed were NPC New Clothes and HGEC and I think this is the problem

When for example wearing a fur armor I get the black screen only in first person and when sneaking, when wearing an iron helmet, I am getting it in 3rd person, the grey screen is still random, but if I dont wear any clothes I will get no black/grey screens. So either the HGEC meshes dont work together with NPC New Clothes or NPC New Clothes is buggy in the first place. Just wanted to write this since many people here think the black screen bug is hardware- or graphics-related. Well it isnt always

Learning to use Wrye Bash, you'll find it helps a ton with mods. Plus, it has a "Nvidia Fog Fix" which helps a ton with that problem. Download it and the 2 pythons downloads that go with it and you won't have as many problems. Hell, I haven't had any of these since using Wrye Bash.

Yes - there is more than one Nvidia Black screen problem.

Loading the Nvidia black screen fixes just after the Unofficial Patch

(which is supposed to fix one of the problems, btw) works best for me.

If you are using Shivering Isles then place them next after SI and the SI

unofficial patch if you are using it.

A lot of people swear by Wrye Bash, but I get along with good old OBMM.

- Maybe that's why I still get an occasional crash or lock up.

I cant use the unofficial patch. My game wont start once its installed. But I wanted to learn a little bit about wrye bash anyway so Ill check that out right now

I had the same problem as you are having until I set up as I described.

The load order for the nivdia patches without UOP or SI would be first, after the esm's. I expect.

I would maybe think twice before using UOP again, but I didn't use it with my first go 'round,

so I thought I'd try this time.

Still I wonder why your game won't start with it installed ?

Are you using XP or Vista ?

I am using XP x64, which is kind of sluggish sometimes but works great for most of the times. Like I said, I never had the bug when I used a non-modded Oblivion.

I am btw using a 8800 GTX, so its most likely like you said: Nvidia + game elements (modded, most likely) causes these problems. I havent gotten any black/grey screens recently, (no fix or uop or bashing applied/done) so I am happy right now :D

Now I just need to find out how to light up my game again. Natural Environemnts made the nights and interiors so dark, its annoying.

Havent had the issue for quite some time but suddenly there it goes again. I tried various fixes (blackscreenbugfix , nvidiblackscreenbugfix) until I finally found one that really works: blackscreen fix for natural interiors (I AM using that mod) No more blackscreen since then!
