arcanyia
Sorry if you've been dealing with this already but I'm really quite desperate and would appreciate any help! Wanted to go back to Oblivion after a long time but it's unplayable, in the cities I'm safe but every single time I go outside it crashes, either before/after a battle or just walking around. In my old system it crashes to desktop and in the new one i get a blue screen and have to reboot. Reinstalled my drivers, then the game without mods, tried different versions and all my characters and every advice I found around. Using WinXP Professional SP3 on ASUS A7N8X-X, AMD AthlonXP 2600+ 1.92GHz, 2048MB RAM, Radeon X1950 Pro, SB Live. Could anyone share some helpful suggestions? Tx! BossDweebe
Are you running a lot of high res mods ?Try a lowish screen res - 1280X1028.Trim the grass back.Don't try to push too much with the X1950 Pro card, and Athlon 2600. And the one I tell everyone. Check you pagefile.Delete it, re set it (at least 1.5 times RAM), and then defrag your hard drive. EDIT: Just re read your post. It's happening with a fresh no mod game.Anyway go for the low settings first - Have you read the Oblivion tweak guide ? You say you tried all your characters. This means old saves ? Old characters/saves may stuff up without all the mods they were linked to.Have you tried starting a new game ? My older system is very similar - Athlon 2700, NVidia 7600GT, and the game runs well. Maigrets
Sorry if you've been dealing with this already but I'm really quite desperate and would appreciate any help! Before I recently upgraded I was running an AthlonXP 2600 and an NVidia GeForce 6600NX graphics card. I could run the game on high, with 150 mods including OOO and MMM and lots of textures, but not anything like Qarl's.I did have distant buildings and land turned off and grass and objects distances reduced to about 1/3. I could run it with window reflections and high water detail. The best resolution I could run was 1024x768 on a 17" CRT monitor. For your issue try deleting the game INI in Documents and Settings\your name\My Games\Oblivion Let the game generate a new one and see if it makes a difference. NEVER touch the INI in the actual game directory called Oblivion_default.ini. This must not be altered. You could also try running the game using a Clean Boot. This will close down running backgound processes and free resources for the game. It can also help identify problems like corrupt codecs and programs trying to access the internet. Microsoft Help Page - Clean Boothttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 Corrupt or damaged codecs can cause this as well. If you have any codec packs installed try removing them. Then install K-Lite Codec pack (highly recommended and safe). It can also detect unneeded and or damaged codecs when you install it and remove them. You may not have installed a codec pack...just watching videos on the net can install a codec without you knowing. But, most if not all the popular codecs are included in K-Lite so there should be no reason to install one from a web site. If asked it's best to say no. They can include Spyware among other things. K-Lite Codec Packhttp://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm Check for Spyware and Addware. If you have Nero Burning Software installed it can sometimes interfere with Oblivion. Delete this file if it applies:C:/Program Files/Common Files/Ahead/DSFilterNero will still function correctly. As BossDweebe says, have you started a new game entirely? BossDweebe
Maigrets settings sound good. Similar to the settings I have on my oldersystem. I manage O.K. with distant lands on, but I turn off window reflections.Things are a bit jerky though.Still - best to get the Oblivion Tweak Guide from "Tweak Guides". Then you can work out the settings that best suit you. The DSFilter bit is interesting, I'll have to remember that, and the codec pack. I haven't done videos yet. arcanyia
Ok so, I run the game in 1024x768 and I tried low details, hdr/bloom/nothing, deleted oblivion.ini, set pagefile to 3GB, defrag'd disks, checked for viruses and spyware, reinstalled K-lite and removed the Nero folder. Hmmm...next up is clean boot and starting a new game.
