I've always hated the way you become Thane in Skyrim

The Dragonborn is a superhero for god's sake!!

He's the only one who can stop the dragon scourge and the only one who can take down Alduin permanently!!

Yet the Jarls degrade him by making him run round and do menial tasks for their citizens before he can become Thane???? It's not as if they're voting him in as Highking!!!

Here's my take on becoming Thane:

Start by doing the main quest line til you finish Dragon rising. At this piont you will be given the title of Thane of Whiterun. You can purchase Breezehome. You will be given Lydia as house Karl.

It's important to do this quest as it is towards the end of dragon rising people realise you are Dragonborn.

Here comes the change....

The houses in the other holds you get when becoming Thane are already occupied by a Thane in my scenario. All of them come from other parts of Tamriel. They are all old and tired and want to return home to live the last part of their life in peace. Away from dragons and the civil war.

To become Thane you don't have to suck up to the Jarl. Just knock on the door of the "Thane" house in the hold you want to live in.

The old Thane will open the door and recognise you as the Dragonborn.

You say you have heard rumours that he wishes to sell his property. He'll say yes, if you meet his price. You hand over a large amount of gold. He'll sign the deeds over to you. He'll then say that he has no need of his Thane title as he intends to leave the hold permanently. He will then perform a short ceremony handing the title over to you and instruct his housekarl to serve you as well as he/she has served him. He will then leave after that.

That's it.

New title. New house. New housekarl. The house is fully furnished when you buy it, of course.
