Game keeps freezing! Tried almost everything...

Alright so I recently bought Fallout 3 GOTY Edition, mostly out of nostalgia and excitement for Fallout 4 but THE GAME KEEPS FREEZING. It freezes to the point of nearly game breaking. It will literally freeze 5 seconds into the game and I have to restart the game around 10 times an hour (no joke).

I've tried the solutions listed in many forums:

- tweaking some things in the Fallout ini file.

- Installing GFWL and xLive

- Installed K- Lite Codec Pack

- Checking some of the options in the Properties > Compatibility section in both Fallout3.exe and Fallout3launcher

aND THE GAME STILL CRASHES EVERY 5 MINUTES.

I have a powerful computer that can run all the latest games at the highest graphics so my computer isn't the problem. What is?!?!? I am so frustrated, this is keeping me from enjoying this game that I used to (and still do) love so much.

Tehandyman - Hello!

Freezing is almost always the Fallout 3 multi core bug.

Fallout 3 has trouble with multi core computers, mainly with ones that have more than two cores & use hyperthreading.

There is a fix, you need to edit your Fallout 3 .ini file.

"tweaking some things in the Fallout ini file."

If that was applying the multi core fix then make sure you did not edit the wrong .ini or missed one of the two needed lines.

It's a common mistake to edit the Fallout_default.ini that's in the Fallout 3 folder.

The one you want to change is:

For XP:

My Documents\My Games\Fallout3\

For Vista & Win7:

Documents\My Games\Fallout3

The file you want will be called:

FALLOUT.ini

Open the .ini with Notepad & change this line:

bUseThreadedAI=0

to:

bUseThreadedAI=1

& insert this line under it:

iNumHWThreads=2

Save & close your ini.

Hope this helps!

Hi. I had the similar problem with windows 7, 64bit and Intel i7.
The ini file change does not work for me.
Only possibility was to set the maximum cores to 2 already while start up.
Can be done the following way:
run msconfig

switch to start tab sheet

press advanced in the middle of the screen

set max number of cores to 2

reboot

This works perfectly well for me (without any other compatibility setting) - but don't forget to switch the setting back when you need your machine power!
