3D web comes a step closer

Such a platform and primarily web based interface already exists for 3d web, and has for the last 8 or 9 years. Cybertown, and some others uses a web based interface that works with a fairly small client. The problem is really the limitations of content that such a service can provide without requiring the downloading of many large files, and the quality of connection. As anyone who has used Second Life at any time may have noticed, it can often take several minutes before objects which are placed in an environment get textured properly, and likewise, they may also notice that the cache for SL can get rather large, rather quickly.

In short, the information needs to be sent one way or another. I would much rather have a client and data files which are downloaded than be sitting there waiting for an environment to load every time I tried to use it.

This is essentially the same kind of creature as discussed here

just packaged differently.

Frankly, those social networking kinds of sites just seem to have enough problems when you're dealing with just a 2d environment. When you combine something like facebook with the really sad state that some existing worlds, like second life, have become (always been), all you're really doing is asking for trouble. The web as we know it is better off being in the current form, where it can be filtered and viewed without all this other crap getting in the way.
