bben46
When using the ccleaner -or any other registry cleaner, be sure to reboot the entire computer both before and after using it. When you have uninstalled, rebooting sets the registry entries to orphan status (not associated with any program) and allows the cleaner to find and remove them. The the reboot after allows windows to clean up the registry and fill in the gaps left by the removed entries. It usually takes a little longer to reboot after because of this registry reorganization. Also, Micho's advice of making a backup of the clean install data folder is good. Mine is just a copy of the entire contents into a new folder (in my F:\Games\Backups\Oblivion\clean-data folder) At this point it will only take a minute to copy. After adding a dozen mods copying the \data folder could take a lot longer.
Endersfinalend
Well, to update, I just followed bben's guide, to the letter, including reboots, I tried installing the patch, nothing. Unless there is something obvious I've been missing, I think it's time to revert back to XP... Thanks a lot, -endersfinalend

Did you remember to install to someplace other than the default location?

Unless there is something obvious I've been missing, I think it's time to revert back to XP... Thanks a lot, -endersfinalend Did you remember to delete or rename the Oblivion.ini file? Did you remember to install to someplace other than the default location? Which Oblivion.ini file are we talking about? The one from the install that is being redone or the one that I just installed? I made sure that all of the game files were gone from my previous installs before I would run ccleaner. Also, I have changed the default directory to C:\Games\Oblivion for the last 4 attempts. Thanks, -endersfinalend
Endersfinalend
Well, I ended up re-installing Vista. It solved the problem, I'm back to happily hacking my way through the wilderness and killing goblins. I'm thinking it must have been an issue with my Vista install, possibly a virus or some such thing. Well, at the very least, it's fixed now. Thanks a bunch to all you guys for taking the time to help me with my problem, -endersfinalend
