bben46
Are you running a nVidia GPU older than the 8-Series (i.e., 7 or older)? If you are, then there are some Meshes files that are telling your GPU to perform functions it cannot do - which results in a black screen. Tip from Kivan (author of Unofficial Patches): Delete all of the files labeled "Cobweb.nif" in the "\Oblivion\Data\Meshes\Dungeons\Misc" folder. If you installed in the default location) Those "Cobweb.nif" files are written for nVidia 8-Series and newer GPUs. Deleting these files will not cause any problems for Oblivion, but it will eliminate some black screen problems with older GPUs. I have also seen some help using this: Windom Earle_s Oblivion Crash Prevention System http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22282 It's being updated often so if it doesn't fix all of your crashes check back in a few days. Note, it is not a mod and doesn't install like a mod, so be sure to read the instructions. I still get an occasional black screen. When I do, I turn off BOTH HDR and Bloom. Then when I get passed the point where it crashes, I turn on whichever I am using at the time - my 7600GTX will only do one or the other, but not both. BossDweebe
Desperate times call for desperate measures. You say you have installed Oblivion several times. You have "cleaned" the registry, and installed countless drivers.Fonts and desk top SNAFUed. Are other games working ? If not then Windows has become very unhappy and wants tobe reinstalled with service pack 2 for sure, no I think so. Also your machine has DDR2 RAM and a processor running @2800.Why not bite the bullet and get a graphic card worthy of the rest of the system ? 8800GT cards are cheap as chips now, and you will be very happy with the results, and you can run the latest drivers as well. Also get a two slot cooling solution if it will fit in your machine (ie.Gainward)Which reminds me -the 8800 cards a a lot longer than the 7000 series so you may have to also move your HD to fit it in. Oh! That's right - One thing leads to another - you'll also need a psu around 500W. I get very good results with the 8800GT card and an Opteron 180 running @2400and old fashion DDR RAM. You did remember to delete Oblivion.ini file after you updated the driver, right? EDIT: I have to say that I kind of agree with BossDwebe
stamsammy
you know what, i just tried using the driver again (after uninstalling the other) and it kinda worked: It let me play for longer than usual- about 20 minutes + instead of crashing to black screen the game just froze... after about 5 minutes i restarted. Is this maybe a good sign ? Edit:by the way, i'm curios- is this driver magical or what ? why is it so sure that it will work (and it kinda works in compression to the others)
