Icefiddell
I began to do some research on this story not long ago and thought i'd post a topic about it on here. For those of you that dont know, on an island in Indonesia, scientists discovered numerous remains of a creature they named Homo floresiensis. In other words, a human like creature, that was only 3 ft tall the best skeleton intact was a female whoose remains were only 18,000 years old. Other specimens found ranged from 95,000 - 12,000 years old. Even more amazing is that with the bones tools were found e.g, a spear i think and even tools made of stone, showing that they were primitive intelligent life. With this discovery it completly destroys the theory that you need a large brain to perform intelligent task because there brain was 1/4 the size of ours, it also disproves the theory that modern humans began to systematically crowd out other upright-walking species 160,000 years ago and have dominated the planet alone for tens of thousands of years. Some scientists even believe that these creatures could still be alive today, on uninhabited islands around indonesia and in deep within the rainforests of indonesia. Just curious on your views on this subject.

surian
No, this is without a doubt a new species. Some scientists are actually considering whether or not it should be clasified as Homo [something] at all. It's quite amazing becasue these hominids were actually sophisticated enough to gather in communities, use tools and fire, and their vocal capablilities and brain capacity makes them more than capable of speach. So, Homo Sapiens were not the only intelligent life on the planet in the last 20,000 years anymore. It's very interesting and it stands everything we've ever believed about our history on it's head. So again, these are not just Homo Sapiens with dwarfism, there are no scientists who have studied these creatures who think that.
Harver
Oh, so this is substantiated. I thought it might have been something just going around the net... Wait... it would have to be homo unless these creatures came from a different evolutionary line than humans did...
Abramul
I knew I saw something about this before here...remember seeing it in Science News. The article should be open to all, and for those too lazy to click...http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20041030/a5495_1918.jpg
loveme4whoiam
Interesting. I don't suppose anyone could supply the links to these Net articles; i feel all wierd not really knowing what i'm talking about. What do people think about the impact this has on the whole evolution chain of thought. I don't know much about evolution or Indonesia, but i'm guessing they were pretty isolated from the rest of the world. Is there anything there that would be advantageous to a smaller upright-walking species that there isn't elsewhere?
Marxist ßastard
As for the former, island dwarfing is a relatively common evolutionary trend, as I understand -- the remains of pygmy elephants were found on that same island, even. As for the latter, it is generally accepted that Homo floresiensis is very close to, if not a direct descendant of, Homo erectus, and thus was already in a position to be walking upright.
