The most common problem is when you unzip into the data folder, it creates a new folder in the data folder with the name of the mod and places the texture, Mesh and some other files there instead of in the data\textures and data\meshes folders.

There will be a \modname\meshes folder and a \modame\textures folder inside. MOVE each one into the \data folder Not the data\textures & Data\Meshes folders. It will warn you that t will overwrite, answer yes to all. That should put your meshes and texture folders in the right place. If you open up the data\textures folder you will see a new folder with the name of the mod - the new textures should be in that.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong... I put the meshes in, textures, and everything else in the data folder correctly, and when I create a new character, the new race turns out purple without a head

purple is missing meshes, no head may be an overwrite or you moved or deleted something. If you convert the mod to an Omod useing OBMM, you'll have no install problems

Am I just the most retarded gamer or am I missing something?

I have placed the textures and mesh's in the data folder so it is /data/mesh and /data/texture... and I can't seem to get the mod to texture correctly, and all the guides I've looked at aren't giving me the information I need, I need a diagram... step BY step instructions, because this modding stuff is really really new to me, thanks.

Finally I figured out the problem! I had two Oblivion folders downloaded for some reason, and the files were getting separated, thank you all for helping me.
