Fallout 3 Ending - Your Choice

Let me start off by saying I really liked the Fallout 3 ending. The main reason for that was the difficulty of the choice at the end (regarding the FEV virus). Releasing the virus may well be the only chance for civilisation to return to something like it was (as the main problem, the overwhelming hordes of mutants, is no more). On the other hand, the cleansing would involve the deaths of millions of sentient, innocent people as well.

When I played through, I found that choice hard enough even though I had no idea that most humans were considered "mutants". I assumed the only non-evil creatures to die were Ghouls. I'm not a bigot, so the thought of killing every single Ghoul was not a pleasant one. Nevertheless, I released the virus, and was unpleasantly shocked when I discovered my otherwise virtuous character was responsible for the deaths of almost everything in the Capital Wasteland.

If you (you as you are now, in front of your keyboard, not your character) were faced with that kind of choice, what would you do?

Aside from the problem of killing everyone on the surface, it's never a good idea to just set a deadly virus loose into the world. If it's a virus, it'll mutate once it leaves my control (especially in a radioactive environment like the Wasteland). When it runs out of its target, some small percentage of it will probably have mutated to consume other things that were not originally intended.

Lilgamefreak: That raises an interesting point actually. I've never played Fallout 2, and never really thought the Enclave in Fallout 3 were that evil at all. Sure, they were ruthless in persuing their own goals, and extremely prejudiced, but so is every major faction in the Fallout 3 world. The Brotherhood of Steel, for example.

Maybe I listenened too closely to Enclave Radio, but the only thing that seemed wrong about the Fallout 3 Enclave was their belief that anything was justified for the greater good. Colonel Autumn did decide not to poison the purifier for humanitarian reasons, despite the fact he was a ruthless male without a father in taking it over in the first place.

I'm guessing they were much more evil in the previous games?

Same goals in FO2, FEV virus to destroy all "mutants" including all the people out in the wastes as FEV was released into the airsteam after the bombs hit the Vault-Tec FEV research labs. SO everyone that survived the nukes and lives in the wastes has very low FEV "poisoning". (Learned in FO1, The GLow was the facility.)

FO3 story was basicly just FO1+2+ tactics stories rolled into one.

FO1 -> pure water

FO2 -> BoS vs Enclave Plots

Tactics -> main bad guy was a robot

Maybe I listenened too closely to Enclave Radio,

Or you didn't listen closely enough on Three Dog? The guy did call the Enclave out on their BS several times.

For that matter, I've never played the previous Fallout games either and I figured out the Enclave were the bad guys just by listening to Eden's broadcasts a few times, since I recognise obvious propaganda when I hear it.

Plus, Eden was voiced by freaking Malcolm McDowell. I don't think I've ever seen or heard him play anything but baddies.

Three dog is doing propaganda for BoS. I think if i was avaible to join BoS or Enclave , i would join Enclave because of : air support, better equipment , and good ideals (much better than BoS )

My choice would be the one that hopefully will come with the third DLC. Get out of there and let the whole place blow !

Seriously, I didn't understand why it had to be done then and now. Sure, it would further increase the radiation in the Potomac River. And it would take another decade to rebuild Project Purity. But the knowledge is there, Doctor Li is still alive and while the Project is rebuilt the BoS of Elder Lyons along with 101 could search the Wasteland for another GECK. After all they DO know there are several more out there somewhere.

In addition they know the location of at least two perfectly functional Vaults (101 and 112). Why not use their tech and knowledge, if only to search another GECK ?

Having played F2, I knew full well the implications of releasing the virus. This game did a good job of not really telling you about it directly unlike in F2. That might be the only thing I like about the ending. Seriously, can't Charon or Fawkes deal with it?

It was not a hard decision. To make Lyons do it, I mean. She is an absolute b****.
