kiskoller
The Main difference between the Oblivion (and to a lesser extent, Morrowind) Hero and Skyrim Hero is, that the Skyrim Hero is a champion by birthright, while the Oblivion Hero is a champion trough deeds. Example: Dark Brotherhood Oblivion: : You join as a common murderer, then slowly you prove to Vincente that you are capable of assassinating targets. Thus he lets you go to Ocheeva. She gives you harder missions, which prove your worth to the Black Hand, thus they make you a Silencer, and they give you more secret and harder missions. At this stage you do everything by yourself (at the previous misison everyone helped you plan out the murders, but as a Silencer you have a target name written down and thats it) SPOILER : After you murder the Black Hand, the Night Mother tells you how good you are, thus she makes you a Listener. You did things, thus you earned to be leader. Dark Bortherhood Skyrim: You join by killing a gramma, then you do 1 or 2 contracts, and BAM the Night Mother telly you you are the new Listener. No deeds done, you are the leader by birthright, because you are special. Mage Guild Oblivion: Even for joining you have to go to every Guild Hall to prove yourself! And when you have Choices and Consequences mod installed, then you have to do small tasks before each story quests, and prove that you are capable to cast high level spells. At the end the Archmage tells you how good you are, and if you manage to kill Mannimarco, then you should be the next Archmage. Mage Guild Skyrim (=College of Winterhold)You cast a spell to enter the College, cast a spell at a seminar, then you have to go to an exavation side and BAM the Psijic Order tells you how special you are. No deeds done, you are leader by birthright. How to fix this: Dark Brotherhood: After joining the DB, you have to do EVERY Contracts Nazir gives you (Kill vampires, Housecarls, pirate captains etc) before Astrid would give you the first real contract, with the Markarth girl and her Bandit lover. Thus when Cicero comes and when you spy on him, you feel that you earned yourself to be an assassin, and the Night Mother has some kind of point about why you should be the Listener. Add another NPC to give contracts in between the story quests, since Nazir's Contracts are done by now (DB Ressurection mod gives such NPC I belive) and now you have a longer, more rewarding storyline. College: First you have to prove yourself to Faralda. Then you head inside, do the ward seminar, then a new NPC tells everyone to go to rest, and read some books, prepare for tomorrows exams, etc etc. When you talk with him, you can ask wether there are some interesting experiments going on. He says that the excavation of Saarthal is going on, but he does not want younglings to enter it, since it is dangerous. He says only senior members of the college may enter. In order to become a senior member, you have to help the others (do radiant quests and maybe integrate other mods college quests) and finish at least one magic master quest (proving that you are not a warrior fetching books for the college, but an expert at casting spells, who can teach others). Maybe he can give you some quests as well. After you do all that, he makes you a seniour member (giving you expert robe and hood), and tells you Tolfdir just headed back to Saarthal with some students, despite his warning about the dangers lurking around that place. And he asks you, as a seniour member of the college, to hurry there and look after them. After all Tolfdir has the tendency to focus only at whatever he is doing, and to forget about his progenys. So you head there, after you already proved to be a good mage, the Psijic Order can rightfully say that you are special. Both of these solution require minimal scripting, a new NPC with voice, and him giving some quests to the player. These are not perfect scenarios, but it would blend into vanilla skyrim and its voiced NPC's pefectly.

FrenchieDwemer
Agreed. Guild storylines in Skyrim are ridiculously short. Not to mention the mere fact a pure warrior who can barely use a few basic spells can become the new Archmage, and so on. "Well, you joined yesterday and killed a few bandits, looks like we have a new werewolf among us boys !"
