Maybe you have recently deleted some textures/meshes that has something to do with certain NPC's looks?If so, reinstalling that "certain npc mod" could bring back those missing assets that the game was unable to load or simply reinstalling the whole game (after uninstalling all mods) just to get back any missing files from the game.
