Tadaa
There are many companion mods already, but most of them are mainly focused on killing or about player commanding armies. My idea is about having a coward sidekick, who never fights, but can be usefull in other means. So, what if you could teach your companion to do things for you; Teaching your companion should be based on your skill, for example if you have only 25 skill of lockpicking, you can't teach your companion to unlock hard locks. (same goes for disarming mines, repair, hacking computers, healing your injuries etc.) Learning should take some time, maybe a few ingame days, (= 0-25%, 25%-50%) and you could only teach him one skill at the time, so that way it feels a little like an RPG. Howerer, your companion could have a one special talent, like cooking or maybe creating stimpacks for you, if you bring him/her materials. Remember Myron from Fallout 2? Companion also could have some of the basic options, like: searching ammo for you, loot corpses, and automatically hide and stay away from firefights. Basically it means that the companion is either some sort of an robot servant, that you have made with a science skill, or a learning child that you have rescued. It doenst make much sense if it is an abult - I highly doubt that pacifist type of person would survive in wasteland. :P I might start working on this by myself, but I have a total zero modding exprience, so is that even a possible to make? charger
maybe not have it based on your own skill..vic and myron in fallout 2 could do stuff that you couldn't if your skill was low, which made them useful to have even though they weren't fighters..it would be cool to have a couple of specialists you could hire to help with your shortcomings :)

Perhaps there might be some afternate path to the updating/teaching, like for a robot you could buy some parts for a high price (= 0>25% lockpicking 500 caps) I edited the post a little to make it less confusing. :)
Markmid
I like the idea of an apprentice type character yes, especially if you can shape their character depending on your actions. You could probably modify their skill levels, if not you might just replace their character with the updated apprentice, when you teach them or do a quest that will teach them something. Possible types of character, you may not of thought of: Dog or Any Pet. A Man with no memory. A slave or other character who has always had a Master till now. Some very sick or injured person who you help to overcome their injuries or at least mitigate them. I think the fallout universe lends itself better to no miracle cures but instead fighting to cope against the odds. Btw I have just started my own companion and could use ideas or suggestions too, check out my signature if you have time :)
davidzaccaro
I like this idea, I really do. But there is always a But, I think you would need a Fallout Overhaul to make the game balance because in Vanilla you can get Ammo, Stimpacks and other Items pretty easy soo having a Companion have all this features would Un-Balance the game. So you should be looking out for a Fallout Overhaul Mod. So for this mod I think Leveling and getting Items would had to be Really Hard or just Hard, to make it really balanced.
