[LE] Installing Creation Kit for SkyrimVR!

Recommended Posts

I have managed to download and install the Creation Kit from Steam after creating a registry entry detailed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimvr/comments/r3oxit/using_the_creation_kit_for_vr/ which installs it in A Skyrim Special Edition folder next to my SkyrimVR folder. So far so good - when I tried to run it it complained that steam_api64.dll was missing - which is in my SkyrimVR folder. So - do I copy the steam_api64.dll to the new Skyrim Special Edition folder OR do I move all of the contents of the Skyrim Special Edition Folder to my SkyrimVR directory?

I tried running it where it is after copying the .dll and it ran, although I got 7 warnings about various .nif files not being found - the editor opened, but I couldn't see any evidence of any of the SkyrimVR stuff that is installed etc.

I also found instructions to download SSE Creation Kit fixes - which has clear instructions to copy these files into the folder that has CreationKit.exe in it.

I found another post saying that I needed to download SkyrimVR strings - but these specific files are not present in my existing Skyrim VR Strings directory...

So I am now very confused - I suspect I have to copy all of the files into my main SkyrimVR directory, but if so I am worried it might overwrite something and break my existing installation with all of the mods installed. Would it be better to rename my SkyrimVR folder and reinstall a vanilla version of SkyrimVR to use creation kit with?

I would really appreciate any help or advice

I only have very limited ambitions e.g. I would like to make an NPC and a player house and see how I go from there. If it would be easier to buy Skyrim SE and run it from there I would happily do that, but would the produced mods still work with Skyrim VR or would they then need to be converted?

EDIT: Just bought Skyrim SE as it was on sale for about £12 - so going to try that and then see if the mods I make work when imported into VR...

Pulling what little is left of my hair out...

Update just in case anyone else wants to try this. I ended up buying Skyrim SE as I was concerned installing CK into my Skyrim VR folder might bugger my installation and mods up. But the process still isn't straight-forward...

Assuming you already own Skyrim VR and have it configured in Vortex:

1. Buy Skyrim SE and install it from Steam

2. Download and install the Skyrim SE Creation KIt for Skyrim SE from Steam

3. Download and run the Creation Kit Download Patcher and then download and copy the SSE Creation Kit Fixes files from Nexus Mods into your Skyrim Special Edition directory

4. Create your mod in Creation Kit and save your it in the Skyrim Special Edition/Data Folder, then launch Skyrim SE and make sure the mod is enabled - you can do this by clicking on Play then Mods then Load order.

5. If you want to test it in Skyrim VR zip the .esp and drag and drop into your Skyrim VR mod list in Vortex to test.

5.5 OPTIONAL - you can allow Vortex to manage Skyrim SE as well if you want to test your mod with other mods installed, it will share the same download folder but needs a separate Mod Staging Folder - it will by default show all of the Skyrim VR mods you have installed but marked as uninstalled.

6. This should work fine for mods based on the Vanilla game and/or the three DLCs - not sure if mods which rely on SKSE64 in Skyrim SE will work in Skyrim VR or not - some SKSE stuff from SE does work, but generally not those that call a .dll...

Now I just have to learn how to use CK - I have watched all of the official tutorial videos, although they are 10 years old - but it has given me the general idea. I have created a very simple room with a few items in just to make sure the whole process works and I was able to load the mod in SE and move around it etc. Now for a proper go at making a player house...
