Meshes Simply Refusing to Load?

I'm using Vista and I had UAE turned off at one point to see if it would help - didn't, so I switched back (is it even that important for security reasons to keep UAE on? Because I haven't been using Vista long enough to not find it annoying). And here is my Oblivion path:

C:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion

Thanks for all the speedy reponses.

EDIT: The RustyItems mod has always been pretty far down on my load list, like towards the end.

It's incredibly important to make a choice:

You can either keep your default Oblivion folder (C:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion) and turn off UAC

or

You can reinstall Oblivion to a safer location away from the Vista Security Protected "Program Files" folder.

I'm about 90% convinced that's the trouble, although if it isn't the next usual suspect would be to examine what MMM is doing with armor and weapons.

There is a third option that many computer savvy people take and that's to both disable UAC and install into a different file location away from "Program Files". There is a lengthy explanation from Microsoft and what is actually happening here, but suffice it to say that Vista's security doesn't allow a non-microsoft friendly program to install into Vista's secured Program Files folder, Instead it creates a sort of "virtual directory" as I understand it. This is what causes the trouble with installing to the default directory and adding mods to Oblivion.

But I didn't install the game to Program Files... I installed it to C:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion

I'd heard of this problem from the get-go, so I purposely cut Program Files out of the path.

Oops my bad!

Next I guess it's time to examine the plugin.

While I do that, would you use your OBlivion mod manager to examine the conflicts with Rusty Weapons and note any in Red and what they are.

Here are the conflict messages, though it's worth noting the RustyItems mod is OOO and MMM compatible and should simply override everything.

Overrides original entry in 'Oblivion.esm'

Conflicts with Oscuro's_Oblivion_Overhaul.esp and Mart's Monster Mod for OOO.esp

There is a version specificically for OOO and MMM, but that's not the one you linked.

It's here in case you want to look at it:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13302

The last thing you should double check is that this folder exists and it has 5 meshes in it.

C:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data\Meshes\Rust\Weapons

(this is assuming that the problem is with the weapons meshes, and it could be with the armor, but I'm going on the assumption that if the weapons loaded correctly the armors should have, also.

That's the version I'm using. Those conflict messages are from that version. The conflict detector shows tons of conflicts, anyway, but this is the only problem I've had so far. Well, I've had another annoying one, since we're on the subject. The intoxication effect from OOO (blurred vision) doesn't show at all for me - except at the last second just before it wears off.

Anyhow, thanks for all the advice. I'll keep trying until I figure out what exactly is wrong. I've definitely tried everything that's been listed so far.

It's working, all of a sudden... god knows why. Hopefully it stays that way.

Glad it's working but just a note, linking the wrong file made it a waste of time to check the paths and plugin of the one you linked, since it wasn't the one you're using. It may not be an issue this time, but for future reference it does no good to check a different version than the exact thing you have installed.

In my defense, the OOO-compatible files were ESPs only and didn't contain any hard data, and I still downloaded and installed the original RustyItems mod. So it was more like the ESPs slipped my mind rather than wrong file linkage.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, it looks like the problem has returned, though this time affecting rusty arrows. I've tried everything - checking the paths in the .esp, checking to make sure the texture paths are correct, checking the .nif paths themselves - and I can't get to the bottom of it. Moreover, I'm encountering a lot of invisible enemies. Too many and too far away to be related to the Invisible Village quest. I'm pretty sure it's actually the textures not showing up. Thing is, sometimes enemies will show. Other times, the same ones are completely invisible. I've encountered invisible mudcrabs in the Imperial City sewers and invisible skeletons holding yellow error markers for shields.

Please advise.
