Bertilsson
The really short and overly simplified answer is that Long war is longer and harder.

dubiousintent
I have no experience with Warspace Extension. However, as far as a recommendation of the pros and cons I am aware of, these are:WE is more a rebalancing of vanilla. Vanilla strategies seem to work well. If you just want small changes from vanilla, go with this one.Edit: The author has recently (27 Oct 2013, top of the download page) declared the mod 'done' and has no plans to update it for the new 'Enemy Within' expansion. Moved on to other games. LW is more than merely a rebalancing.* It has new soldier 'classes', which are distinct sets of Perk choices with some reworked Perk effects.* It is effectively a rewritten 'Marathon mode' game, though it does still leave the old 'Marathon' mode available. (Marathon is NOT recommended to use with LW.)* A number of functions have been modified or completely repurposed (at least 290 have been counted).* The strategy portion of the game has been revised to such an extent that vanilla strategies are no longer effective. (Note this is not true for tactics. If you are not clear on the difference, look both terms up on Wikipedia.)* This re-thinking of strategy takes some getting used to and tactics must also be re-evaluated in the face of increased numbers and skill of the aliens.* It is generally considered even harder than vanilla 'Impossible' on any mode greater than 'Cinematic'.* It is EXPECTED (I would say pretty much guaranteed) that you will lose missions and countries.* Version 2 now has a mechanism for regaining countries that have withdrawn from the XCOM alliance.* Research takes longer, and Labs (& autopsies) are much more important than in vanilla.* The play can easily take two years of game time. Suggest you read the 'Long War Strategy' thread to get some better ideas of the changes. In short: LW is a much greater re-working of the game; to the extent it can almost be considered it's own version of it. No matter how experienced you are with vanilla, you start out as a rookie again with LW. Hope this helps.
