Guards = Superheroes?

Trying to do the Thieves' Guild quests is an exercise in annoyance. Why?

It does not matter how stealthy I am (somewhere around 50%), how much chameleon layering I have added (54%) and how many potions of invisibility I have taken, and the fact that I am wearing shrouded armor, the guards still see me and address me as if I just walked up to them in full plate. Furthermore, it doesn't matter if there were none around when I break into a house. They are hot on my trail as soon as the crime occurs, sometimes immediately standing in the room yelling "HOLD IT RIGHT THERE LAWBREAKER!" the moment I pick up the item from the dresser.

By the way, I am using Reneer's Guard Overhaul and have turned the settings way down. I get the feeling that whoever designed the guard AI would have been a real %&$! as a GM if I was playing AD&D in their game.

If reneers guard overhaul isnt working then you really must be walking around in full plate and kicking all the pottery in the house.....I've never had a problem as soon as I turned it on, I've never even needed to adjust any settings.

As I said, Shrouded Armor (light armor with Thief/Assassin bonuses), Sneaking with a skill around 50, about level 54 Chameleon, and maybe an invisibility potion thrown on top for good measure. The only way I was able to escape with the ring that was needing to be stolen in Leyawinn (sp) was to immediately Recall to Frostcrag (after about three reloads).

I change out of my heavy armor when doing the thief missions, just as I did for my assassin missions. The guards just appear.

Also, I had guards chase me forever after breaking into a house in Imperial City to steal stuff to raise my fenced loot total. I was even off the map into Morrowind and could not fast travel because "You cannot fast travel when guards are chasing you". What guards?

Oh, well. I can make the changes in RGO but maybe there is a mod that is actually preventing it from taking effect.

not very familiar with the mod i tried using it once but didnt work cause i had many other mods that altered guards IDs. still it shouldnt work that way. if you are using invisibility potions then no matter which mod you are running they shouldnt spot you. make sure that when opening a door there are no guards around, even if you had taken an invisibility potion for that milisecond between the transition after activating the door you are completely visible. if that still isnt it then i guess theres a mod conflict.
