UncleRoe
Waking up to another hot day,I wouldn't have it any other way. Sitting down, sipping morning joe, waiting for my commander to give the go. "SGT David", my commander calls,"Your teaming with a rookie today."..my good day falls.. Getting dressed i feel depressed.. Today me and the rook will patrol the west.. An extremely dangerous stretch of road,Guess today i'm carrying the load. The rook, now shaking and adrenaline rushed, fears deeply his life might be crushed. I tell him "eyes open rook, if you die you shall..but not before firing that 50 cal!" For hours we walked the urban waste, against a desolate wind of sandy taste. A noise in the distance caught our attention, screams of automatic gunfire with deadly intention. On the ground now,we crawled to the walls, closer we approached the gunfire calls. Two enemies spotted, maybe two hundred feet away, guess the rook is going to get his cherry popped today. I silently give the order to take aim but not fire, position your rifle near the fences wire. My ears sudden ring in pain, the rooks rifle mis-fired..turning his target into a stain.. Our position now given away, our left over enemy is not running away. Forced to pull back,We run towards better cover, the rook wishing he was with his lover. Now in extreme pain, suddenly flying through the air, sand in our faces, blood in our hair. The rook lay across my legs screaming in agony, his guts on my chest, going into cardiac arrest. He looks in my eyes grabbing my arm tightly, trying to speak his last say. I'll never forget the words he spoke before he passed away. He said when your near death and praying for god to save your soul. There is no white light waiting for you, just a stillness of death and cold. The rest he said will remain in my head, words reserved only for thee. My rook friend lays dead, one enemy ahead, and no white light for me.
