Melee damage along with AP can reduce attack speed and possibly make melee combat more variable. That is, having received solid damage, the player will have to break the distance, since he will no longer be able to effectively block attacks or change weapons from heavy to lighter and faster.

That's essentially what I mean. If the player technically and mechanically cannot move away or isn't fast enough to escape enemy animation it could lead to inevitable death or just perpetual stim use until some external influence breaks it up. However, I don't actually consider stun-locks an unfair situation but a reasonable punishment for failing to create space. People refuse to accept dying in games nowadays... When I was a wee lad we would die constantly, reload and then back at it.
