Argomirr
If I remember correctly, you need at least a 128 MB video card (Direct3D and DirectX 9.0 compatibale, of course) to play Oblivion. If it does work however, it probably won't be running very smoothly. I can remember hearing something about 'Oldblivion', a program that allows you to run Oblivion on older video cards, but I'm pretty sure you'll still need that 128 MB. You might want to check out their site. I'd suggest you buy a new video card 'cause Oblivion looks a lot better on a good video card, and with that little video card memory, certain mods will probably become unplayable. roquefort
i see. best get down the shop and buy one then. thanks.Unless you want all the graphics settings in the game at or near maximum you shouldn't have to pay much for a new card. Check the online dealers, prices vary widely. If you are thinking of going for a powerful card then make sure your power supply can handle it. bben46
As roquefort said be sure your power supply can handle the new card. Most stock inexpensive computers (HP, Dell, Gateway etc) scrimp on the power supply as they were never intended to be upgraded. A newer video card can easily bring a 300 Watt power supply down. The minimum I recommend is a 450 Watt, and even that will have problems with some of the high end cards. Then, be sure your Motherboard will support the card you want. Look at it to see if it takes a PCIe card, a PCI card or an older AGP type card. Each uses a different connector, so a motherboard that is made to use an AGP cannot have a PCIe card plugged into it. Some video cards also require a separate connection directly from the power supply. Older power supplies - and the cheap ones in many stock computers do not have this connector, but you might be able to find an adapter.
SpacemanSpIiff
Ha, yea about that power supply thing. I tried doing that on my HP desktop...needed a new one because I bought an Nvidia 8800 GTS.... Yea...the power supply fried my mother board  Payed $400 for a card i never used.......
bben46
A more powerful power supply will not damage anything if it is installed properly. The power supply makes the power available, it does not force the entire wattage into the boards. If you have a 500 Watt supply and your system only needs 300 Watts, then that 300 watts is all that will be used. The extra 200 watts is a reserve that will only be used if needed. Plus, your power supply will run cooler if it is not operated at it's peak capacity. I have found that cheap power supplies often lie about how much power they deliver. :pinch: I have been working professionally with electronics for over 45 years so this is not an amateur opinion. If for some reason you hook up the 12 volt line from the power supply to the 5 volt line on your mother board, then you have a problem. :whistling:
