Goodfortitude
I have done a lot in the way of trying to solve my problem with fcom. However, my game would still freeze usually when hit with spells whether from a trap or whatever, occasionally from being hit with a weapon. Anyway, I read a lot online about deleting the .ini file to solve freeze ups. Since I'd tried just about everything else I though 'why not. I'm not really having freezes at the start of the game or anything, but just maybe.' So, I did that and ran some tests in a particularly bad area where a lot of freeze ups were happening. Ran great. No lockups whatsoever. Even ran a bit faster. The problem now is my graphics for some of my items such as griffin cuirass, mercury noble helmet and iron staff have completely disappeared on me so if I equip them I get the exclamation points and everything. What am I supposed to do with my save game now? I don't mind starting over if I need to, I'm just afraid that those Items might never show up correctly again. Anyone know what to do with it??? Thanks for any advice!!!
Ranokoa
try looking through the INI file to see if there is any significant which could possibly affect those kinds of things. also, redownload the files and make sure that the path in the CS for the items nif files are correct. If this does not work, go into the CS, manually make a new item, place it in the same place or somewhere else as the ones you have, and manually link the weapon the the nif. That should solve any and all problems. If not, then i am sorry i can not help you without more information.
Goodfortitude
Thank you Ranokoa, Well, it's a relatively new character. Really, I've had so many problems that I've had to scrap just about everything, esp. when my pc crashed a few months back. So, would it be any problem do you think if I just started a new game? And, the majority of my info is actually in this thread: http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showtopic=115534 However, now I've reinstalled fcom and I really only have a basic setup with Deadly reflex added into the mix. I've used boss and everything. But, what I did was I copied and pasted the old INI file into my new installation of Fcom in an effort to save my settings. So, all my new save games are 'based' off that old file... i guess. Since I have a brand new fresh install of Obliv and Fcom, I'm thinking that with this fresh INI file I could start a fresh game and Voila. yes or no? 'good'

'good' The Oblivion.ini file, located in ...\documents\mygames\oblivion folder, is used to specify the hardware and initial settings Oblivion uses. It is initially created when Oblivion loads and you make your first save. Therefore, whenever you add or change hardware or drivers, it's a good idea to delete or rename the .ini, and then Oblivion will redetect hardware. That said if you've been tweaking the .ini, it might be a good idea to keep track of the tweaks. Any mods that change hardware settings should only be doing that when they are loaded. So to try to answer your yes/no question, I would suggest renaming the current .ini and starting a fresh game with save, and see what happens. You can always put your old .ini back. Goodfortitude
Therefore, whenever you add or change hardware or drivers, it's a good idea to delete or rename the .ini, and then Oblivion will redetect hardware. O.k. thanks for the info! Installing Fcom doesn't change any drivers for Oblivion that relate to the INI file does it? Just to be sure. That said if you've been tweaking the .ini, it might be a good idea to keep track of the tweaks. I only tweak settings 'in game'. Is that what you mean as well? Any mods that change hardware settings should only be doing that when they are loaded. I didn't think that any fcom related mods changed any hardware settings/graphics settings. I'm not clear why exactly you said this. That I should watch for system changes with mods? So to try to answer your yes/no question, I would suggest renaming the current .ini and starting a fresh game with save, and see what happens. Roger that. Will do! No mod should ever change a driver, if it did, the author should be shot (drivers are specific to the hardware component) Settings changed "in game" are reflected in the .ini file when you save (this allows them to carry forward, and they are inevitably related to things like resolution, visual effects, etc). What I was talking about is tweaks to the .ini that you apply outside of the game. I know that there are some mods (performance related) that make .ini changes. I don't know if FCOM makes .ini changes, I would be pretty amazed if it did. Although there are some pretty good performance mods out there, in general, I don't like them. If for no other reason than that I would prefer to control my computer (basically if my hardware is not good enough, or the game is too piss poorly written, well, I'll try something else). I hope this makes some sense.
Ranokoa
Well, whenever, for some reason, i have a character that has gotten far and i absalutely HAVE to make a new character i do this. Go into the CS, remember as best what i had before, put an activator that will get me to the absalute last quest stage of quests i am unwilling to redo, put a bunch of equiptment (but not all) of the ones i had previous, and type in the console player.additem 000000f "whatever" to get as much gold as i had before. So starting new is not the end of the world, its just a hassle to get things back to normal.
bben46
If you really want to do some serious tweaking, This is the site for help:http://www.tweakguides.com/ Do the system tweaks first, then the video card tweaks, then the game tweaks. The site is not just for Oblivion, but covers a lot of other games and non game stuff.
Goodfortitude
Thanks so far for all the tips. I've started to narrow down the problem... I think... maybe. I deleted the ini file right? o.k. I started a fresh game and then applied the settings I like. For example I turn off HDR (makes nice lighting effects, but turns the NPC's into bright, glowing candle like people.) then I turn on Antialiazing. Anyway, I still had the freeze ups. So, I went back to HDR and everything was fine again. Apparently, the freeze ups had a lot to do with my picky attitude in the settings. BUT, I'm STILL not getting my items to show up in game. Some of the NPC's even have the wonderful big yellow exclamation marks on em. I just don't understand what DELETING MY INI FILE had ANYTHING to do with those darn items! And, if I started a fresh game with a fresh INI why didn't they come BACK!??? It's not like I did anything with the MODs or even rebuilt my fcom patch or anything... (long pause, long pause)...WHAT.... MUST... I... DO... I could try this suggestion by Ranokoa: "redownload the files and make sure that the path in the CS for the items nif files are correct." But, I really don't know how... and even then, if I checked the path for certain items in game, I don't even know how many items are missing at this point or even which overhaul mod they're a part of. could be hundreds, thousands... MILLIONS even!! o.k. that's a little melodramatic. But, you know what I mean. Hopeless. I wonder if rebuilding my patch at this point would even help.
