Deleting the Oblivion.ini file

If you have the yellow exclamation points it has nothing to do with the Oblivion.ini file. They are caused by missing meshes - usually from mods being installed incorrectly. Not all mods install in exactly the same way, so when you do identify which mod (s) caused it, be sure to read the readme that is supposed to accompany each mod.

I know. Or, knew, or thought I knew. exactly. Missing meshes. But, and this is where I got really confused. all I did was delete the ini file. that's it. Before I did that, I only had probs with the game freezing up on me. AFTER I tried deleting that file, I reloaded my game and then 'poof' no more items in my game and no more bows on the backs of certain enemies. That's it. So, by that I knew then and there that the INI file had SOMETHING apparently to do with meshes because I didn't do even one thing with my mods. Immediately after deleting the INI, I went in game to discover missing items. What it has to do with it, is beyond me.

Anyway, pointless to even talk about it now. I restored the file and nothing came back. So, at this point, I only see two reasonable choices: reinstall everything completely again... for the fourth or fifth time now. OR, find out which mod is causing the missing meshes. At this point I'm going to go into my save game and find the names of those meshes. Hopefully, someone can identify those for me 'cause I'm not too sure. I'm guessing frans, only cause it's a lot of items. But, not too sure.

thanks bben.

Well, I just looked up and found those files to be a part of francesco's. The worst part is, I looked up every one of those pieces that I can't get in game in my meshes and they're all there! This is so frustrating. I don't even get why they vanished and don't know how to get them to reappear. If they're in my meshes folder where they belong... then... why aren't they showing up?

Just to let everyone know, I'm reinstalling. So that no one invests any time into trying to solve this. I think the whole problem to begin with, as far as I can tell, was just my persistent changing of graphics settings. This time around I'm going to just leave my graphics settings at pretty much default and stick with a fairly basic FCOM setup. If I have problems after that, well... I give up I guess. lol

And, NOW the lights come on. I was reading the tes4mod:fcom/FAQ online and read this:

If you've already got all the files, then you may be suffering from the official Bethesda 1.2 patch. The patch itself is great and provides a lot of added stability to the game, but Bethesda removed the ability to have an ESM file automatically load an associated BSA (BSAs that are associated with ESP files still autoload correctly). Since Fran's optional items is an ESM and it uses a BSA for its artwork, many users got burned by this change.

The typical solution is to register the Fran optional items BSA in your Oblivion.ini file so it always gets loaded when the game starts.

That's when I realized what had happened. Now I realize why that BSA file registration part of Frans optional items add on is so important. I may have solved my problem simply by running frans optional items add on program once more.
