Hello.

I am at the moment trying to learn the GECK program and I have recently built my first own vault. But the reason why I wanted to

get to know the GECK program was primary to be able to create my own gun but with another texture, but so far I havent succeeded with that, can anyone tell me how I use a texture?

textures in fallout are .dds files, you can open/save them by getting either the DDS plugin for gimp or photoshop. the vanilla textures can be found by unpacking the textures.bsa archive and looking under fallout3\data\textures. then you can open them with gimp/photoshop.

those textures are then applied to a 3d model using a UVmap, which is a set of coordinates telling the model how to "dress itself". to get a models UVmap get nifskope, open the model with nifskope, right click on the NiTrishape block, and select Texture>Export Template. and that will spit out a .tga file (i think) that shows the lines of the uvmap. this can also be done in blender, but since you didnt ask about modelling ill stay away from that. you can then combine that template with the .dds texture to help you make a new texture.

then you change whatever you like in gimp/photoshop, save the file as a DXT3 or DXT5 dds file.

hopefully that should get you started

It's not really the creating a texture part that is the problem. It's rather how to apply it on the weapon in GECK and get it to look like the model I've chosen in the game. The weapon turns into a 10mmpistol instead of the texture I wished for.

Another question that's been bugging me lately. When looking at the tutorial done by the creators of the game and GECK, I see that they have alot of files in their textures folder. Files that contains item logos, model textures and so on, but in my folder theres NOTHING to be seen so if I were to look for a logo for example the little guy with a gun in his hand I can't find it. is there any way I can get all of that to be shown as files? I put my GECK in the fallout 3 folder, shouldn't I have done that?

to change what texture the model uses you can change it in the geck or you can change it in nifskope

click on the guns NiTriStrips, then on BSShaderTextureSet. under the block details, expand the textures tab and then you can browse to/type in the name of your new textures. (make sure the folder structure looks something like: textures\yourfolder\texture.dds. in my experience if the textures folder path isnt indicated, the textures will show up fine in nifskope but not in game)

http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php/Basic_G...ram_to_the_GECK

as for getting your folders full of the games texture files ill quote what i said earlier

vanilla textures can be found by unpacking the textures.bsa archive

hope that helps

You are all helping me very much so I thank you all for it, but when I install the game there are no "Texture" folder in data. The only texture folder I get is if I insert a mod, same goes for Meshes. Where do I get all of this?

thanks d_thumb

Ah, with bit of thinking I realized what to do, thanks ^^

Now I just have to figure out how I can apply textures onto a weapon. Any idea of any tutorial I could check out?

like where to tell the weapon what texture file to use?

ive always found this tutorial good

http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php/Creating_A_Custom_Weapon

right near the end there it tells you to go to the BSShaderTextureSet of the weapons in nifskope and change the texture path to your new texture.

I should really explore their page deeper than I've done before! =P

Thanks alot for the assistance you all have given me. I shall go and adventure in GECK to see what fun I can do!

Best wishes to you all!

But seriously, isn't there any real easy explained video on how this texture applying is being done?

I mean The creators of GECK doesn't seem to have that at all in their tutorials. I need a simple and easy explaination tutorial on video that explains how to insert for example Burpo's M1911 textures and use them on a new item creation and how to make that weapon look like the M1911 model in both item and equipped. I just wanna learn this simple

creation part. I learn by seeing and not by reading. I tried creating a 1stperson texture item, but cant use it, and I dunno what else to do. Isn't there any help for dum dummies like me? =)
