Article link: How to install Mods - Fallout3

This Tutorial aimed to be simple by leaving out all the information you don't need if you "just want to install some Mods" and to get a quick overview. For more information use the Link at the end of this article.

First of all

If you use Windows Vista, install the Game to another Location. For example D:Games…

You also should backup your "clean" Data folder before installing Mods. It saves time if something went wrong.

Here an example for a "clean" Data-Folder in C:Program FilesBethesda SoftworksFallout3

Installing Mods

Mods come as package -> unpack them to your Desktop by using a tool like 7zip

Now, you have unpacked and the result is:

  • there is a Data folder -> copy the content of the downloaded Data folder into the Data folder of your game

  • there is no Data folder, but other files & folders -> copy that into your game Data folder

All folders like Textures, Meshes, Sound and files with ending *.esp or *.esm belong into the data dir:

To get Mods working

For many Mods (e.g. Body Replacer) you need Archivinalidation -> use ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated and/or FOMM

If you use an Archivinvalidation.txt file instead of FOMM or AI-Invalidated, set bInvalidateOlderFiles=0 to 1 in your Fallout.ini found here: My Documents/My Games/Fallout3

Check your G.E.C.K. Mods (*.esp) at your Launcher

--> finished, start the game

General Tips

Mods are best installed by your own.

Try to avoid extracting something directly into your Game Data Dir

  1. There could be a ReadMe -> It`s recommended to read it before you install a Mod
  2. Make a savegame that is "clean". -> You could need it later - just to be sure
  3. If you have installed a Mod by your self, you`ll know how to remove it
  4. Only add one Mod by one. -> Test it.
  5. If you install a plenty of Mods, you`ll probably have to spend a plenty of time to figure out, why your game is crashing
  6. If something went terrible wrong, you will be lucky if you have Backed up your Data folder

Reinstalling Fallout 3

  1. Uninstall Fallout3 & GFWL -> it is possible that there are various GFWL entries in your System Control
  2. There are two folders left: Game Dir & My Games folder -> delete or rename them to backup
-> Be careful with your backed up data, avoid using old *.ini files
  3. Clean registry (e.g. by CCleaner or RegCleaner) & defrag your hard drive
  4. Reboot
  5. Install Fallout3
  6. Install the latest Patch which fits to your Game version or use the Live Update

Sometimes it is recommended to use the Fake Patch & the Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch

Sometimes Modders get their file structures not correct.

In that case you could try to correct this by your own.

Use a tool like FO3 Archive Utility to open the *.bsa archives (e.g. Fallout - Textures.bsa) to get an idea, how the folder structure has to look like. But do not try to change the *.bsa Archives!
