50's Era 2077?

Ok, if there is an obvious answer to this question I'm sorry. I've never played the first two Fallout game's nor have I delved deeply into the lore of the game itself, but I'm curious... Why is the overall decor and style of the game based on the 1950's-1960's when the Great War happens in 2077?

Are we supposed to believe that the fashion and technology of the entire world simply ceased to advance over 120 years?

A simple or advanced explanation for this question would be appreciated, whichever is easier for you. Also, if their is an article on this particular topic in the Fallout Wiki I'd appreciate someone linking it.

Fallout takes place in an alternate timeline that is often described as "the world of tomorrow", which is to say that it's 2077 as people in the 50's thought the future would be.

Well then if the 50's style 2077 is the "future" what would it have been like in the ACTUAL 50's?

Well, remember, it's not the 50's with better technology, it's what people in the 50's thought the future would be like. I'm not sure when the Fallout timeline diverges from ours, but it is somewhere in the 50's. Maybe what was popular in the 50's just stuck?

Maybe Tailgunner Joe won the Presidency with J. Edgar Hoover as his VP? Who knows what caused it to shift.

So the Cold War and worries about "commies" are still going strong, atomic energy is EVERYWHERE (powering cars, home electronics and so forth), nuclear weapons were feared and eventually used, resulting in mutants, there are still spooky UFO's buzzing the earth, a robot in almost every home as a personal servant and so forth.
