Freezing on attack.

It does it with about any weapon, it can vary from always freezing with that weapon until I fast travel somewhere else, then it works again. It doesn't appear to be linked to one weapon or one area/cell. Sometimes when I freeze with that weapon and then switch weapons after reloading its fixed. But it is annoying. Yet it doesn't happen in combat 99% of the time. It is sometimes rare sometimes happens often. Dunno whats the cause.

Oblivion is a resource hog. It demands all of a computer's resources -RAM, CPU & Hard drive reads. If there is anything running in the background that has taken a few CPU cycles, Oblivion can freeze for a second or two. And possibly not recover. Programs that access the internet are especially guilty. But I had a HP printer driver that liked to 'call home' at odd times several times a day to check for updates (how often does a printer driver change?) It would even try to call when my internet was turned off.

Set any program that auto updates to either a set time or manual. Set the indexing to off, Many antivirus and antispyware programs check everything in the background - every disk read & write. If you can turn off the internet , and shut down those programs while you play. If you have never looked at what is running in the background you will be amazed at how many are running that you don't know about.

What Bben says.

And this link may also help

Problems with background processes.

A Clean boot (a totally reversible process) can help by clearing all unneeded processes, then test the game.

If the game now runs better, you can use task manager to locate offending processes.

I sometimes have this problem with Deadly Reflex (the most recent one included). I played for a long time without getting one of those after disabling it. Re-enabled it and they started to occur every once and a while again. You may want to consider looking at load order, if you are using it, but I have had it occur regardless of where I put it.
