O ye grand modders, forgive this newbie... questions abound!

Hello, first off let me just say that I'm completely new to modding as I've never tried to mod my games before. I do however, typically avoid posting any questions as I normally can find what I'm looking for with a little bit of searching. Alas, I'm being impatient and would rather have the answers sooner rather than spending a week or so figuring it out myself. I played DA:O previously on the PS3 and loved it! So, this past summer when I built myself a new computer I immediately bought the UE on steam when it was like $20 or $30 (an absolute steal in my mind for such a great game plus awakening and DLC = one happy gamer).

Mind you, I'm posting this at work (3rd shift woot woot) via my phone so I apologize if I'm being incoherent or just rambling on and on, I tend to do that a lot. Also I'm using windows 8 64 bit if that helps any.

Now, I've been able to install a few mods using DA modder and I have tried to download the DA modmanager with little to no success. Rar files must hate me for some reason. I think I got it to work before I went to bed though using WinRAR through windows 8 apps but I'm not 100% sure. I'll check it out when I get home.

Do these two programs conflict with one another? Should I only use one? What mods would you all suggest I try? When I get home, I'll post the mods I was able to successfully add to DA Modder so far. Why won't some mods be added to the DA Modder?

Are there any mods out there that I should be aware of that will conflict no matter what I do? Say for instance (if I remember reading another post correctly) the improved atmosphere and the redesigned mod? Or jb3 textures with another one?

I have quite a few other questions but I'm sure I'll be pointed in the right direction to find the answers myself so maybe I won't need to post them. Hopefully there are a few night owls out there who will respond to my post before I get home so I have something to look forward to in the a.m.

Thanks for reading (and responding!)

You might want to read this article, then come back here with any questions about specific mods: Using Dragon Age Mods for Dummies.

As for using multiple mod managers, including the Nexus Mod Manager, (NMM) they don't "conflict with each other". But neither do they know about the mods that any others may have installed. (One of the real benefits of using a manager is the ease of un-installing mods when you decide not to use them. If you're running more than one manager that may become incredibly difficult.)

As for mods that conflict with each other, Dragon Age mods don't really work that way. There's no such thing as "Load Order" the way there is for some other games. If two mods change the same element of the game then only one, the last one "read", (which is not at all the same as the last one installed) will work and the other will be ignored. But the game will still run just fine.

Two mods that are known to cause players lots of problems when used with other mods are "Improved Atmosphere", and "Dragon Age Redesigned". Both are excellent mods in themselves, but when used in complicated environments things get, well... complicated.

IA changes so many aspects of so many parts of the game that it quickly becomes impossible to remove it without breaking any saves made while it was installed.

DA-Redesigned is so huge, and there are so many steps to getting all the pieces installed, that many people get confused and mess things up to the point that they just give up.

Good Luck, and Happy (modded) Gaming!

Thanks for the link and information Thandal! I'll definitely have to save that to my favorites to make it easier access since I doubt I'll retain all that information haha. I have noticed how easy the DAMod and DAModManager make everything significantly easier to deal with mods. Good to know that most mods shouldn't conflict with each other. Guess I'll learn which ones do if I ever add two that have issues with one another.

I decided to go with Redesigned. Didn't seem too complicated to figure everything out. He put easy instructions to follow. I just hope it all works when I finally play the game! I'm looking forward to seeing how different this game is once I finally get done modding. Like I stated previously, I played it originally on the PS3. The vanilla game was great but I definitely knew there could be so much more to it! Those of you who actually created these mods do great work. Keep it up!

Since you've already played the game vanilla on a **cough** console, welcome to the good stuff: Good Mods - Opinions.

That topic has lists from a number of players. They're a bit dated now, but not much since most of the major DA mods had been released by then.
