Video Card Advice

Recommended Posts

Currently I have the GT 8600. I felt it was time for a change after playing GTA IV today. I was expecting High if not Medium graphics. Sadly, all I got was 1 Medium Setting and another at Low. Textures was the one at low. Sad... I know. As picky as I am, I refused to play a game at such low quality. I felt like I was playing a PS2 game. Luckily, the more and more high quality games that come out, the cheaper Video cards get, and even more show up. Now to the point... which Video card should I get?

I am looking at possibly an 8800, but I figured why spend 100 bucks on the next version of what I already have... I want to go bigger with maybe a 9800, but I'm not 100% sure my case is big enough. (Dell Inspiron - 530 is what it says on the front) http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/con...ils~inspndt_530 is the case. (Idiots look to the right.)

If you have any suggestions, please give them to me. I am considering going out tommorow to look at some Video cards, so hurry it up! Just kidding. :) But seriously... xD

PS. I ONLY WANT AN NVIDIA!!!! NO ATI and I HAVE PCI EXPRESS!!!

Your biggest shortfall for upgrading you computer, is that has only a 300 watt power supply, almost any upgrade to the video card will require an upgrade to the psu as well.

Even upgrading to a 8800 series card will require a 400 watt psu. A 9800 possibly greater.

You will find your tech specs on the dell site here:

Oh, yes, I'm COMPLETELY aware of my wimpy power supply. I was planning on getting 700-w at Best Buy along with a video card, they aren't too expensive. But that's just another reason I'm keeping it so low. PS. That is NOT my computer specs. I was just using the link to refer to the CASE. I have 500-w in my rig right now.

1. Buying at best buy = ripped off. If you're going to set yourself up to get ripped off, than I don't want to hear you complain about prices.

2. You're being a fanboy, and so you deserve the fact that you are going to overpay for mediocre performance no matter what you decide to do. The fact is ATI is the best price:performance right now, and weather you like it or not, it looks like they're going to stay that way, all the way through the next lineup.

The 8800 is outdated. So is the 9800. Even a 9800GTX+ is pretty dated. I would recommend an HD4870 but you're being a pretentious little fanboy, so I have to recommend the inferior GTX260 216c.

Power supply wise, if you buy a cheap PSU, you are going to fry your entire system. Stick with Antec, Corsair, and PC Power And Cooling.

Enjoy your fail.

Edit:

I just checked that link on your specs, not only is your case to small to handle anything GFX worthy, but your CPU is so underpowered it is probably limiting you just as much as your graphics card. I don't know what you were thinking

A. Buying a dell

B. Buying a machine that's suited to media center activities rather than gaming, and then expecting for it to play GTA IV decently. Why don't I go buy a nice office workstation and try to play Crysis on it!

How is he a fanboy? he's just trying to build a rig thats at a decent price, you are probably the biggest fanbay around here, since you state everyone else is who uses a nvidia card, knock it off its getting old fast.

I have to agree on the best buy part though

its not easy when you don't know much about comps either, not everyone does or have the money.

Ok, I am going to define this one more time, and if you can't do something as simple as comprehend simple sentences, then I don't know what you are doing on a forum.

A fanboy is someone who does not buy based on the best performance for their money, they buy based on manufacturer or other non-performance based criteria.

A smart consumer is someone who considers the best price:performance ratio for their hard earned money and goes with what suits them best by those criteria.

The truth is that ATI chose a cheaper way to manufacture their cards the last two lineups, they can offer prices that nvidia cant, and deliver roughly equal performance. It makes no sense to pay 10-15% more for a card that is only 5-7% faster.

It has nothing to do with which one I like, nvidia made a bad call this round, and they're paying for it. Literally.

It is a sad fact that nvidia currently offers less performance per dollar at every single price point, but that is how the market is right now. If you don't like it, that's just too bad.

I am not one sided, i go for witch is cheaper to, remember buying a whole motherboard and video card can get expinsive to, in the past i tried many differrent cards, ati, voodoo you name it.

A fanboy tries to make someone change manufactures when the person want's to keep it cheap. Like buying a whole motherboard for that card.

i build systems so i know what im talking about.

Not some 22 year old who thinks he knows everything, bah i thought i would get away from that stuff here, guess not.

Its about price:performance, not just price.

Any motherboard with a PCI-E x16 slot can support any and all modern video cards, so this point is invalid.

Untrue again. This is not just about whats cheap, its about how cheap vs how much performance. You're talking in circles and out of your ass.

I dread to think of what you may have doomed others with.

giving just the model number really doesn't give very much information. your video quality depends on many things, your cpu, ram, how much ram you card has, what kind of display you have. and other programs that you have running with it. give me more information and I would be glad to help you out

And yes how is he being a a fanboy, I would rather use Nvidia over ATI any day,

P.S. if your looking to up grade anything else on your PC check out New Egg

Every thing is much cheaper compared to retail prices

Not true not all motherboards support ati some are ati rated and some are nvidia rated, check newegg or tigerdirect.

especially if you want to go Crossfire or SLI
