TheUndert0ker
I'll admit first off I'm a huge fan of the post-apocalyptic genre in all its forms, however fallout 3 just hit the nail on the head for me in every way. I honestly don't think you could find a more immersive or atmospheric game than this on the PC. Bethesda hit it out of the park on this one and coming from a fan of the previous 2 games (and tactics) they did a superb job with the intellectual property. This game is so immersive, I haven't quite seen anything on the PC in years that could take it to this level outside of everquest or oblivion or morrowind. It's such a huge world to begin with, every corner seems to promise a new surprise, every encounter is a challenge, each level gained is a triumph. And I've beaten the game multiple times now, but there's still so much more to do. Unparalleled replay value here. But the mods just take things to an entirely new level. I really feel sorry for gamers playing this on a console, because they're missing out on some of the most stunning gameplay possible. No game has come close to the level of excellence my modded FO3 has reached tonight. Directory has swelled to 9GB, and I have 30+ mods installed. Not as many as some perhaps, and probably much less than most, but I've spent hours sifting through the staggeringly-large pile of mods here on the Nexus to find the best and it just keeps getting better and better. It's hard to even start because there are so many excellent mods. Tonight I reached a pinnacle of brutality and extremity that I've never seen in any game, ever. My goal was to make a brand new lvl 1 character and hoof it to Rivet City to pick up 3 new companions and start kicking ass vs. hordes of enemies on the Very Hard difficulty setting. Easier Said than done. Due to a combination of mods, ghouls starting reanimating after I killed them. This not only scared the living crap out of me, but it challenged me! It was shocking! I discovered that if the ghouls were not either decapitated or had their legs chopped off, they'd just keep coming! LOL! Even ghouls with no arms would arise and come after me. I guess they could bite your legs off... This cost me lots of ammo, which is now precious thanks to mods. For the first time I discovered why a Ripper is a useful weapon. However, due to a combination of mods ( MMM spawner and XFO + FOOK) the sheer number of ghouls caused my ripper to break down multiple times, forcing me to scavenge scrap metal and other weapon bits to repair it. Awesome, just plain awesome. Zombie survival at its finest. Not only this, but gunfights became extra-deadly. Headshots are pretty much an instant kill. I'm finding myself with crippled limbs constantly. Ammo is so precious and always running out. Think how hard it would be to endure even one bullet, let alone the spray from a machine gun. The big one is radiation. This is a deadly world in that the radiation my character is constantly taking is killing her. Rad-away has become a very precious commodity. Every food and water source is tainted, and a swim in the Potomac is a gamble with her life. Previously, there was virtually no consequence for taking rads. Another incredibly immersive mod is the basic needs type mod (there are multiple interpretations of this, I'm using XFO). This makes my character require food, water and sleep. If you think about it, the lack of requirement for this in the vanilla game is a little disappointing. You've been fighting for 3+ days straight and not slept or ate or drank anything? This is a devastatingly brutal deathland where every source of nourishment is tainted, and true rest without threat is a rarity. A+ to the modders who have thought of such things. Immersion is what every PC gamer craves and FO3 delivers. So, if you're on the fence as to whether to pony up the 50 bucks or less to buy FO3, or don't think it's worth it, my god, you're not gonna find a better RPG than this. It's just not out there. This is the king that steps on the backs of lesser games. Bethesda deserves to be monetarily rewarded for their hard work on this one, folks. Maybe Crysis or whatever has better graphics and whatnot, but once you play through it, that's it. You've seen all its tricks. With fallout, you have the human component where people are creating content that in many cases is far better than what the developers could dream up. Best game of 2008-2009 and beyond! GreyViper
Yes its a excellent game and amazing with mods. Morrowind and Oblivion had also a lot of great modder made content that transformed mediocre or good game into awesome experience. I guess its the reason I don't play Oblivion for story, but for mods. Same apply s for Fallout 3, tough with Broken Steel there might be point finishing MQ. Come to think of it newer bothered with MQ in F2 either. Just went from Arroyo to San Fran and took advantage the 3 way battles near San Fran.
